BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University men's basketball team nailed 14 three-point baskets on Thursday night; the most in a game this season, en route to a 78-71 win over Avila University at the Collins Center.

With the win, Baker improved to 12-8 overall and 5-5 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while Avila fell to 7-13 and 2-8.

Both teams also celebrated the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Coaches vs. Cancer campaign as both coaching staffs and Baker administrators wore sneakers with their suits to spread awareness for cancer research and the American Cancer Society.

The Wildcats were superbly efficient from the floor shooting 24-of-43 from the field, good for 55.8-percent. Baker was 14-of-22 from behind the three-point line for a clip of 63.6-percent and they shot 76.2-percent from the free-throw line on 16-of-21 shooting.

Ben Steinlage had a game high 28 points and was 8-of-10 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Corey Anderson added 13 points and Todd Eils and Todd Johnston each poured in nine apiece.

Four Eagles scored in double figures, as Brandon Murillo led the way with 20. Avila went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and outrebounded the Wildcats, 27-25.

Baker had just a one-point lead at the break, 30-29, but came out on fire to begin the second half, going on an 8-0 run to lead 38-29.

The Eagles then went on a 8-1 run to cut the lead to two points, 39-37, but that's as close as they would come as Baker took home the seven point win to avenge its 66-59 loss against the Eagles back on Nov. 29.

Baker will hit the road this Saturday, Jan. 24 to take on Missouri Valley at 4 p.m. in Marshall, Mo.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), which empowers all sports coaches, their teams and their local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
