BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University men's basketball team opened up the 2013-14 season on the road against one of the top NAIA Division II teams in the nation, as they faced Hastings College on Friday night, but the 'Cats fell, 89-77, to the host Broncos.

Baker received a game high 17 points from newcomer Connor McDaniel, as the junior played in his first game in a Wildcat win, he also had seven rebounds.

Junior EJ Carter added 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and had a double-double with his 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats featured a starting lineup of Carter, McDaniel, Jared Fulks, Todd Johnston and Jauan Wilson in its season opener.

The Hastings defense caused 21 Baker turnovers and led 51-33 at the break and the Wildcats fought back to outscore the Broncos, 44-38 in the second half.

Wilson had nine points with three assists and two rebounds. Baker hit six three-point field goals, as did Hastings.

Baker will hit the road for its next game as they take on University of St. Mary on Friday, Nov. 8 in Peru, Neb., in the HAAC/KCAC Classic at 5:30 p.m.
