SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Baker University men’s golf team kicked off the 2012 Fall season at the Evangel University Tournament at Rivercut Golf Club this week in Springfield, Mo.

Out of six teams, the Wildcats finished fourth with a combined score of 958. Five Wildcats competed on the Varsity squad, while four golfers played on junior varsity.

The tournament featured 54 holes of play with 36 holes being continuously played on Monday and then followed up with 18 holes on Tuesday.

Mirroring the tournament structure of the HAAC Conference Championship to be played in early May, Baker head coach Karen Exon wanted the Wildcat golfers to get an early look at the rigors of championship play, while maintaining focus and composure, making good decisions, and scoring well while continuously walking 16 miles and carrying a 25-pound golf bag for 11 hours only to come back the next morning to walk another 8 miles with a 25-pound bag.

Lee's Summit, Mo., freshman Grant Grego led the Wildcats with scores of 77-74-77 to tie for fourth-place and earn all-tournament honors.

Junior Andy Kelley added rounds of 77-75-81 to tie for eighth-place and all-tournament honors. Junior transfer Alex Zuzelski posted rounds of 83-80-83 to finish third among BU golfers.

Leading the JV squad was Kelley Thompson, who battled through a rough first round 87 to post solid scores of 80-82 for the final rounds as he finished fourth best among Wildcat golfers.

Weather conditions were perfect for the tournament with clear skies, light winds, first-day temperatures in the high 70s and second-day temperatures in the mid-80s.

The Wildcats are back in action on Sept., 25-26 at the Baker Fall invitational hosted by the Wildcats at the Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta, Kan.

Coach Exon and the Wildcats are excited to host the PGA Professional Notah Begay-designed championship golf course that opened in 2010 and has hosted numerous regional qualifiers, Kansas Golf Association, Kansas Women's Golf Association and Topeka Golf Association championship events.
