Baker men head to Rivercut Golf Club for season opener
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Baker men's golf team will open its 2010 season this weekend when they travel to Rivercut Golf Club (Evangel University).
"If we play anything like we have been in practice, it should be a pretty fun weekend," said head coach Karen Exon. "I look forward to seeing what they guys can do in their season opening tournament," Exon said.
Fall Season Coach's Corner
We started out the fall season with fairly lofty expectations after posting varsity team scores of 299-308 at the opening William Woods Summer Shootout tournament. Disappointing, however, were back-to-back 54-hole tournaments hosted by Evangel and Lindenwood where the team did not post strong second-round scores.
These tournaments exposed the youth of our team and demonstrated that guys are going to have to work on grinding out 36-hole tournament days and developing better mental and physical toughness. However, the final tournament of the fall 2009 season helps us to feel a lot better about our toughness and ability to grind it out in difficult conditions.
Adam Taylor in particular and the rest of the varsity squad could have very easily folded under the disappointment of dropping from first to fourth after the Ottawa University Tournament opening round when Adam’s first-round score was disqualified for a procedural mistake. The weather conditions were terrible with wet, cold, and windy conditions. However Adam Taylor came back in the second round to shot a 2-over-par 74, freshmen Mason Dick and Andy Sherman stepped up to shoot a pair of 78s, and senior Jared Drummond posted an 80 as the varsity squad shot the low tournament round of 310.
"I was very proud of Adam Taylor for stepping up to the challenge of playing the way we both know he can play in the second round and providing this young team with some very solid and mature leadership on and off the golf course. And I was thrilled for senior Zack Rockey that he could lead the JV team with scores of 75-78 and earn third place individual medalist honors for the tournament. Freshman Mason Dick also placed in the top five individually with his rounds of 77-78. This is a good way to move into the 'between-seasons' as we concentrate on academic obligations and between-seasons conditioning,” coach Karen Exon said.

Golf plays last event of fall season
Wednesday saw temperatures in the mid 70s with a brisk wind that gusted 15 to 25 mph. A northwest cold front came in overnight dropping temperatures to the low 50s and depositing about half an inch of rain on the golf course. The rain resumed about an hour before the second round and continued through the first three holes of the second day. Rain resumed half way through the round and continued for the rest of the day dropping another two-thirds to three-quarters of an inch of rain during second-round play. Temperatures hovered at 49 degrees as golfers finished.

The weather wasn't ideal for a mid-September day, but even so, the Baker men's golfers posted some respectable scores. Freshman Andy Sherman, from Andover, Kan., posted the fourth best individual effort of the tournament with rounds of (73-80-75). Fellow freshman Mason Dick, from Baldwin City, tied for sixth individually and was the only Wildcat golfer to post three rounds in the 70s (75-79-78). Sophomore Michael Wissman from Overland Park, Kan., had a breakout tournament after a hard week of practice, leading the Baker JV with rounds of 78-78-81.
2009 Season Outlook
Coach Karen Exon is pleased to announce the signing of four solid freshmen golfers who are expected to complement a solid group of six seniors, one junior, and four sophomores.
Mason Dick from Baldwin City and Andy Sherman from Andover, Kan., qualified for spring 2009 state high school championships. Sherman helped lead his Andover Central High School team to the Kansas State 5A title at Emporia Municipal Golf Course last May. They are joined by freshman Jacob Draisey of Raytown South High School, Luke Harshfield of Wichita North High School, and walk-on Blake Randels from Baldwin High School.
