No. 3 Baker men set to host Oklahoma Wesleyan in NAIA National Championship Opening Round

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University men’s soccer team will host Oklahoma Wesleyan University in the 2011 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship Opening Round on Nov. 19.

Baker (17-1-1) and the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament was the first at-large selection in the field of 31. Oklahoma Wesleyan (14-4-2), qualified with an automatic berth after winning the 2011 Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament.

The Wildcats handed the Eagles their last defeat in the regular season on Sept. 27 by a score of 4-2. Baker jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, thanks to goals by Ethan Bauer, Andy Griffin, and Cameron Zimmerman. Donny George sealed the game in the 85th minute, netting a goal off a throw-in by Sean McAlister.

Following their defeat to Baker, Oklahoma Wesleyan finished the regular season 8-0-2. The Wildcats are coming off a 2-1 defeat to MidAmerica Nazarene in the 2011 Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship Game.

Sophomore Lucas Almedia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) leads the Eagles offense with 11 goals and 27 points on the season. He also leads the team in shots (3.2 per game), shots on goal (2.1 per game), and assists (.33 per game.)

Freshman goalkeeper Jack Ord (Plymouth, England) continues to stabilize the Oklahoma Wesleyan defense with 1.36 saves per game and a goals against average of .821.

Goalkeeper Jack Ord, defender Mark Bloxman (Liverpool, England), midfielder Lucas Almedia, and forward Lucas Corderio (Sao Paulo, Brazil) were all named to the 2011 all-MCAC first team.

Freshman Lucas Corderio was named the MCAC Freshman of the Year, freshman Ben Williams (Liverpool, England) was named MCAC Newcomer of the Year and Oklahoma Wesleyan head coach Jamie Peterson was named the Coach of the Year.

Senior Tom Lowndes (Cardiff, Wales) and junior Odaine Sinclar (Kingston, Jamaica) lead the Baker offense with six goals and nine goals respectively. Lowndes also leads the team with 25 points on the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Bickley (Overland Park, Kan.), the Heart of America Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year continues to lead the Baker defense, currently ranking seventh nationally with a goals against average of .650.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Bickley, junior defender Nate Byarly (Olathe, Kan.), senior midfielder Tom Lowndes, and junior forward Odaine Sinclair were all named to the 2011 all-HAAC first team.

Head coach Nate Houser was named the 2011 Co-Coach of the Year with Missouri Valley head coach Vladimir Simic.
