Hays Honored with HAAC Award

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University men's and women's athletic programs both finished with the highest overall GPA's of all 10 institutions in the Heart of America Athletic Conference during the 2012-13 academic year.

For that honor, Baker was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a current male and female student-athlete of their choosing.

Receiving the scholarship on the men's athletics side is sophomore men's soccer player Ethan Hays. The Smithville, Mo., native is a current member of the No. 10 ranked Men's Soccer team.

On the women's athletics side, receiving the honor is sophomore Shannon Bond of the Baker Volleyball team. Bond is a middle blocker for the Wildcats and head coach Kathy Allen.

"I'm extremely proud of our student-athletes for their performance in the classroom during the 2012-13 academic year," said Director of Athletics, Theresa Yetmar. "We set high expectations and our student-athletes work very hard to find the balance between academics and athletics. I'm impressed by their ability to manage their time and focus on quality. Our student-athletes are absolutely devoted to their sport, but also see the bigger picture in finding a career path that inspires them.

"Ethan and Shannon represent the well-rounded Baker student-athlete who has excelled in the classroom and made a strong contribution to their team. We have many others who fall into this same category. I just can't say enough about how proud I am that we were able to earn the HAAC Commissioner's Award for our men's and women's programs in the same year."
