BU, Midland Ready for Opening Round

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University men's soccer team will compete in its third NAIA Men's Soccer Opening Round game since 2008 and third-straight at home, as they host Midland University this Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. inside Liston Stadium.

The 13th-seeded Wildcats enter the match with a record of 14-5-2, while the Warriors come in 18-1-2.

This is the third time under head coach Nate Houser and sixth time overall, that Baker has qualified for the NAIA Men's Soccer National Tournament and second all-time for Midland. This marks their first appearance since 2009.

Midland comes in with a 20-game unbeaten streak and has won eight straight games, their only loss of the season came in the season opener when they fell to Grand View University, 3-1, Grand View is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation and earned the No. 1 seed in the national tournament.

Baker makes its first appearance in the national tournament since 2011, when they advanced all the way to the NAIA national semifinals.

Midland and Baker last met on the pitch back on Sept. 17, 2011 at Liston Stadium and the Wildcats won that match, 4-2.

The Wildcats enter the match having won six straight games including three wins over nationally ranked teams in that stretch, with wins over Missouri Valley, Benedictine and MidAmerica Nazarene, all three of the aforementioned teams advanced to the NAIA Opening Round.

Offensively, Midland has outscored Baker by 28 goals this season, with 64 goals scored compared to 36 by the Wildcats.

Baker has allowed just 20 goals this season, while the Warriors have surrendered only 12.

Sophomore forward Adam Wood leads the Warriors in goals scored with 22 and ranks fifth in the nation with those 22 goals.

As a team, Midland ranks 10th in the NAIA in total goals scored and 11th in the country in shots taken per game at 18.9.

The Baker defense has seven shutouts this season and as a team Baker features eight HAAC All-Conference players including first teamers defender Amer Didic, defender Andy Griffin and midfielder Ben Coyle.

With a victory on Saturday, the winning team will advance to the 2013 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship final site in Montgomery, Ala., and will compete on either Dec. 2 or Dec. 3 in the next round.

Tickets for the game are as follows, $8 for adults, $5 for students with ID, Military with ID and senior citizens (62 and Over). All those with an NAIA Pass will be admitted for free.

Ticket pre sale/pickup will take place at the Baker University Harter Union this Friday from 11-1pm. After a generous gift from anonymous donors, ALL Baker students will receive a complimentary ticket to the football and soccer games.

The complimintary ticket MUST be picked up at the Union this Friday between 11-1pm. Students are required to present a valid student ID to receive their ticket.

The game will be called by Play-by-Play voice Jim Joyner and color analyst Michael Draper.
