Baker bounced back in the nightcap, defeating Texas Wesleyan University 3-0. Maggie Holmberg pitched seven scoreless innings and gave up only three hits with nine strikeouts. Baker scored all three runs in the sixth inning thanks to RBIs from Katie Worley, Erin Greenwood and Holmberg.
In the third game on Friday, the Wildcats faced No. 5 Lubbock Christian University (Texas). The Chaps jumped to an early 2-0 lead, but Baker held steady until the sixth inning when Lubbock Christian broke the game open with a four runs. Erin Greenwood pitched five innings, giving up four runs on five hits.
The Wildcats faced Oklahoma Baptist University twice on Saturday. In the first game, OBU jumped to an early 2-0 lead after scoring twice in the first inning, but the Wildcats battled back in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single from Brooke Allen. OBU defeated Baker 2-1 in game one and 5-1 in game two.
“We faced some national caliber teams and we were in every single game until the late innings,” Baker coach Matt Windle said. “Our defense and pitching were pretty good for not having a chance to practice outside yet this season.”
The Wildcats also played HAAC competition when they faced Graceland University on Saturday afternoon. Heather Gruber and Brittany Vollenweider homered to spark the Baker offense. The Wildcats’ three-run sixth inning keyed the 4-2 victory.
“Overall this was a great tournament for us this weekend,” Windle said. “What concerned us as a staff was our inability to plate more runs. These are all fixable things and I believe that we are going to be a dangerous team this year.”
Baker will return to action on March 4-5 when it travels to the CBC Meltdown in Conway, Ark.
