BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team continues to make huge strides under second-year head coach Matt Windle.

Friday night saw the Wildcats defeat No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene University in an extra inning affair that ended on a bases-loaded bean ball in the tenth inning.

Maggie Holmberg was stellar yet again pitching ten innings of shutout ball while giving up just five hits in the 1-0 victory. She currently owns a team-best 8-1 record with a 1.61 ERA.

Game two saw the Wildcats fall, 3-1 to the 24th-ranked Pioneers. Brittany Vollenweider was the lone offensive spark in the game, as she went yard in the second inning.

“It was a good step for us,” said head coach Matt Windle. “We played some good competition to open the season down in Arkansas and Texas, I think these girls are ready to compete with anybody in our conference.”

Saturday afternoon the Wildcats traveled to Atchison, Kan., to face the Benedictine Ravens. Baker dropped game one, 9-6 but bounced back in game two with a 2-1 victory.

Brooke Allen, Erin Greenwood and Annie Hannon all recorded two RBI’s in game one.  Erin Greenwood went the distance in game two giving up zero earned runs on three hits with eight strikeouts.

Maggie Holmberg went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Brittany Vollenweirder added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a pinch-hit single up the middle to score Kayla Morse from second.

With the weekend split, Baker (17-11, 6-2 HAAC) currently sits in fourth place in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Standings. The Cats‘ will return to action on Tuesday evening against Avila University for a 5:00 p.m. doubleheader from Cavaness Field.
