Baker sweeps Culver-Stockton College; tied for HAAC lead

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team didn’t skip a beat on Tuesday evening as they went on to defeat Culver-Stockton College in a doubleheader.

Game one saw the Wildcats get off to a slow start. Baker failed to plate any runs until the bottom of the fourth inning when Erin Greenwood scored on a single by Katie Worley.

Baker sealed the game in bottom of the sixth when Katie Worley got the inning started with a single to deep center field. Heather Gruber singled through the hole at shortstop and Katie Worley advanced to second. Annie Hannon got on base thanks to a drop third strike, consequently moving all the runners to load the bases. Gilges trailed in the count 1-2, but managed to turn on a ball, blasting a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Wildcats a 5-0 advantage from which they never looked back.

Maggie Holmberg (9-2) was stellar on the rubber pitching a complete game shutout while giving up just four hits.

Heather Gruber (5-5) continued the pitching dominance in game two, going the distance to pick up the 3-2 victory.

Brooke Allen led the way offensively going 2-for-3 at the plate with a HR and two RBI’s.

The Wildcats return to action Wednesday afternoon for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.
