Wildcats drop two extra inning heartbreakers to Graceland

Erin Greenwood

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – It took 19 innings of softball for Baker to finally close out its Wednesday doubleheader against Graceland University. Baker dropped game one 3-2 in 11 innings, and followed that up with another 3-2 loss in nine innings during the nightcap.

It took eight innings in the opener for each squad to finally plate a run. Graceland led off the top half of the eighth with a sacrifice bunt to move the runner over to third and Staci Ritchey followed that up with a single to give Graceland a 1-0 lead.

Baker started their bottom half of the eighth with a failed bunt attempt by Alexis Cox, but a passed ball with Tara Chumley at the plate advanced Alyse Menghini over to third. Following a strikeout by Chumley, Baker was down to its last out, but thanks to a misplayed grounder with Brooke Allen at the plate, Baker tied the game at 1-1 heading into the ninth.

Graceland yet again led the top half of the ninth off with a sacrifice bunt and followed that up with a double to deep left by Alyssa James to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 advantage, but Maggie Holmberg quickly regrouped and struck out the next two Graceland batters.

Baker again bounced back in the ninth thanks to a leadoff double from Erin Greenwood to tie the game.

Graceland finally closed out the opening game in the 11th inning after another sacrifice bunt to lead the inning off and a deep double by Tiffany Craig. Baker was retired in the bottom half of the inning, 1-2-3.

Maggie Holmberg was tagged with the loss after giving up eight hits and three earned runs with 17 strikeouts. View box score.

The drama didn’t end in game two.

Baker took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning when Brooke Allen led off with a triple to deep right field. Allie Losey followed that up with a sacrifice bunt to give Baker the 1-0 advantage.

Graceland evened the score in the sixth inning on a two out rally thanks to a single, stolen base, passed ball and wild pitch all in succession. Neither team struck again until the eighth inning when Graceland strung together a series of hits and sacrifice bunts to take a 3-2 lead.

Baker answered in the bottom half of the eighth when Brooke Allen came through with a clutch single after Austin Boehm opened the inning with a groundout, scoring Tara Heinrich from third, but Baker went down in order to close out the game.

Erin Greenwood was pegged with the loss after pitching eight innings, while giving up two earned runs and three hits. View box score.

Baker (9-10, 0-2 HAAC) returns to action on Mar. 31 when the team travels to Culver-Stockton College.
