Wildcats Sweep Missouri Valley

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team picked up its second and third straight victories on Sunday afternoon, in a doubleheader sweep over Heart of America Athletic Conference opponent Missouri Valley.

The Wildcats defeated the Vikings, 4-3 in game one and 5-3 in game two and improved to 18-10 overall and 10-4 in the HAAC.

Baker is now all-alone in second-place in the HAAC standings, Missouri Valley fell to 10-12 and 4-6 in the HAAC.

In game one, Baker and MVC traded runs in the first and second innings, with the Wildcats scoring two in the bottom of the first and the Vikings scored two of its own in the second.

In that first inning, Baker hit back-to-back home runs with Erin Greenwood pulling a home run over the right field wall, then Alyse Menghini came up next and smacked a line drive home run over the left field wall for Baker to go up 2-0.

Greenwood also had a nice day in the circle picking up the win after throwing a complete game seven innings and gave up just two earned runs and five hits. She also struck out seven batters.

Menghini finished the first game with two hits and Greenwood went 3-for-4. In game two, Greenwood again got the start and went three innings without giving up a hit, but Mallorie Nelson came in relief and picked up the win after throwing four innings and striking out seven batters.

Seven of the eight runs scored in game two were scored in the fourth inning. MVC scored three runs in the top of the fourth and Baker responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Greenwood began the inning with a single to right field, The Menghini singled to right field and Kelley then came up and doubled to deep left-centerfield, scoring Greenwood and Menghini.

Nelson then followed that up a two-run home run over the left field fence. Nelson then shut down the Vikings the rest of the game and Baker tacked on another run in the fifth inning to take home the 5-3 win.
