Baker Splits Home Twinbill with Peru

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team dropped its first HAAC conference game of the 2014 season on Tuesday, as they split its home doubleheader with Peru State with a 3-1 game one victory and 4-2 game two loss.

Baker now stands at 15-15 on the year and 5-1 in the HAAC, while Peru State captured its first HAAC win of the season improving to 18-15 and 1-5 in the conference.

In game one, Mallorie Nelson got the start and had a shut out going through the first five innings. She also allowed only one hit on the game and struck out 12 batters.

Baker opened up its scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first by third baseman Alyse Menghini.

Then Baker added a run in the third and fourth innings. As a unit, Baker had five hits with Menghini, Renata Dill, Mallorie Nelson, Cami Williams and Ilona Miller supplying the hits. Dill and Williams had the other two RBI.

In game two, Katt Cooper threw all seven innings, allowing just four hits but did give up four earned runs.

Baker went up 2-0 with runs in the second and third innings, but Peru State responded with a run in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Peru State also hit two home runs off of Cooper with Halle Holloway and Anna O'Gorman supplying the two homers.

The Wildcats will next face rival MidAmerica Nazarene this Thursday, Apr. 3 at 5 and 7 p.m. in Olathe, Kan. MNU is 10-7 overall and 3-2 in the HAAC.
