Wildcats conclude HAAC schedule, look forward to playoffs

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – In just his second season as head coach, Matt Windle has taken the Baker softball program to new heights.
The Wildcats (26-18 overall, 13-7 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference) finished the season in fourth place in the HAAC standings, a major change from a year ago when Baker compiled an 18-31 record and 7-13 mark to finish eighth in the conference.
“I think our hopes were to play our way into the top five in the conference, but we got to a point where we had the potential to win the conference,” Windle said. “We put ourselves in a position to do much better things than we intended.”

Wildcats split with Evangel on Senior Day

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University seniors will have something to hang their hat on, knowing the program as a whole is on the rise. Saturday afternoon the Wildcats split a doubleheader with Evangel University on Senior Day.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard early in game one, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Wildcats held Evangel to just one run in five innings, but a big seventh inning sunk Baker in game one. The Crusaders managed to score three insurance runs, two of which occurred via errors committed by the Wildcats.

Wildcats split with Graceland University

LAMONI, Iowa – Maggie Holmberg pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning of game one, but Graceland University managed to mount a two-run rally to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
The Yellow jackets (9-25, 3-11 HAAC) stunned Baker (25-15, 12-4 HAAC) in the bottom of the 10th with a walk-off 3-2 victory.
Brooke Allen led the Wildcats offense going 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Erin Greenwood also recorded an RBI going 1-for-5.

Baker sweeps Culver-Stockton College; tied for HAAC lead

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team didn’t skip a beat on Tuesday evening as they went on to defeat Culver-Stockton College in a doubleheader.
Game one saw the Wildcats get off to a slow start. Baker failed to plate any runs until the bottom of the fourth inning when Erin Greenwood scored on a single by Katie Worley.
Baker sealed the game in bottom of the sixth when Katie Worley got the inning started with a single to deep center field. Heather Gruber singled through the hole at shortstop and Katie Worley advanced to second. Annie Hannon got on base thanks to a drop third strike, consequently moving all the runners to load the bases. Gilges trailed in the count 1-2, but managed to turn on a ball, blasting a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Wildcats a 5-0 advantage from which they never looked back.

Wildcats split with Lindenwood; keep HAAC title hopes alive

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – At the beginning of the season, Baker softball head coach Matt Windle never envisioned his team contending for a HAAC title in just his second season at the helm.
The Wildcats (22-14, 9-3 HAAC) currently sit in a tie for third-place in the HAAC standings after splitting with conference leader Lindenwood (18-16, 5-1 HAAC) this past weekend. View the game one box score here | View the game two box score here
Brooke Allen continues to lead the squad offensively with a .400 batting average and 42 hits on the season from the leadoff spot. Freshman Erin Greenwood has been the Wildcats’ main run producer with 21 RBI’s.

Home runs power Baker past Avila University

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team continues to roll as it defeated Avila University in a doubleheader on Tuesday evening at Cavaness Field.
Game one saw Baker (19-11, 8-2 HAAC) take an early 1-0 lead in the second inning before adding two more runs in the third. Avila battled back to score one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to tie the game before Baker was finally able to seal the game in the bottom of the sixth on an Erin Greenwood single.
Greenwood (pictured) went 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI’s while Heather Gruber and Brittany Vollenweider each added RBI’s of their own.

Softball set to host Avila University Tuesday evening

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Wildcat softball team will return to action Tuesday evening when it hosts Avila University (6-21, 1-5 HAAC) for a 5 p.m. doubleheader from Cavaness Field.
Baker (17-11, 6-2 HAAC) is coming off a weekend where they split conference doubleheaders with No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene and Benedictine College. The Wildcats are currently tied for fourth-place in the HAAC Standings with Evangel University.
Avila comes into the contest in ninth-place in the HAAC Standings, with only one win thus far in conference play. The Eagles ended a five-game skid with a 3-0 victory over Culver-Stockton College on April 3rd.

Victory over No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene highlights the weekend

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team continues to make huge strides under second-year head coach Matt Windle.
Friday night saw the Wildcats defeat No. 24 MidAmerica Nazarene University in an extra inning affair that ended on a bases-loaded bean ball in the tenth inning.
Maggie Holmberg was stellar yet again pitching ten innings of shutout ball while giving up just five hits in the 1-0 victory. She currently owns a team-best 8-1 record with a 1.61 ERA.
