Baker small dance team wins 2011 NAIA NDA National Championship
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – While it may be an emerging varsity sport in the NAIA, the Baker University small dance team took one huge step forward on Friday afternoon winning the 2011 NAIA NDA Small Dance National Championship.
The Wildcats finished ahead of HAAC rival Benedictine College and Concordia College (Neb.)
“I am extremely proud of the dancers,” said head dance coach Lynsey Payne. “We have worked really hard all year and it has paid off greatly. This is a huge step for our program and the NAIA in moving towards varsity sport status.”
Currently, competitive cheer and dance is considered an emerging sport in the NAIA. Under NAIA guidelines competitive cheer and dance reached emerging sport status in 2009, when more than 25 institutions declared to participate as varsity. Under the NAIA governance structure, 50 member colleges and universities must declare in order for the sport to reach varsity status.
“We are looking forward to what the future holds for the dance program after such a successful year.”
