Volleyball team goes 1-3 in opening weekend


ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Baker University volleyball team traveled to Orange City, Iowa this past weekend and went 1-3 in the Red Raider Classic.

Baker dropped its opening match to No. 12 Doane (Neb.) 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 9-25). Christina Delladio and Sydney Pemberton led the way offensively, each recording 10 kills. Libero Brooke Allen had 19 digs.

BU’s only victory of the weekend came against Briar Cliff (Iowa) in the second match of the tournament, as the Wildcats defeated the chargers 3-2 in comeback fashion after dropping the first three sets. Christina Delladio led the way with 12 kills while Savannah Smith added 10. Setter Jana Boss had 32 assists.

Saturday’s action saw the Wildcats fall to No. 20 Dordt (Iowa) and Morningside (Iowa) by scores of 3-1.

“We played about as tough a schedule as we could at that tournament,” said assistant coach Matt Windle. “We were able to compete and we hopefully learned some lessons that we can take into another tough tournament this weekend.”

Baker travels to the Bellevue Invitational on Sept. 2nd where it will face two NAIA Top 25 programs in a rematch with No. 20 Dordt , followed by No. 15 Northwestern (Iowa).  The Wildcats will also go up against Concordia (Neb.) and Hastings College (Neb.)
