BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – In day one of its host Baker University Invitational tournament, the Wildcats finished 2-0 with a four set win over Sterling College, 24-26, 25-21, 25-18, 25-11 and defeated Friends in a thrilling five set match, 23-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-13.

With the two victories, Baker improves to 7-4 and a perfect 3-0 at home after last night’s four set win over William Woods.

In the first match against Sterling, Baker fought back after losing the first set by two points, 24-26.

After settling down, Baker rolled in the final three sets with the help of Crystal Simon’s team high 13 kills and Savannah Smith added 11 and handled the Lady Warriors attacks in the back row with 16 digs. Renata Dill led the way in digs with 17.

Freshman Danielle French handled the net all match long with 10 kills and six blocks. As a team the Wildcats collected 11 team blocks.

In arguably the best match of the day at the Collins Center, Baker dropped its first two sets against Friends and had to claw its way back to a tough third set win, 25-19.

Four Wildcats had double-digit kills against the Falcons including Smith with 18, Simon with 10, French with 11 and Shannon Bond played terrific with 12 and a hitting percentage of .333.

Jana Boss supplied Baker with a team high 47 assists and was all over the floor with 12 digs and helped out with two blocks.

Saturday marked the second five set win of the season for Baker, as they defeated Briar Cliff in five last weekend at the Bellevue Tournament.

Baker will finish up the Invitational tomorrow, as they take on John Brown (Ark.) at 11 a.m. and Kansas Wesleyan at 7 p.m. at the Collins Center.
