Volleyball Suffers First HAAC Loss

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Baker University volleyball team lost its first Heart of America Athletic Conference match of the regular season on Tuesday night in a four set loss at Evangel, (25-17, 18-25, 19-25, 26-28).

The Wildcats fall to 11-9 overall and 2-1 in the HAAC, while Evangel improves to 15-8 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the conference.

Baker has dropped four of its last five matches, but will look to bounce back this Thursday, Sept. 27 as they take on Ottawa at home at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the game online at www.bakerwildcats.com.

The Wildcats began the match on top winning the first set, 25-17. Baker hit .300 as a team in the first set with 11 kills on just two attack errors.

But Evangel’s defense picked up in the final three sets holding Baker to hitting percentages of .139, .085, .273 respectively throughout.

Savannah Smith had a terrific match for Baker with a team high 17 kills and was second on the squad in digs with 13.

Evangel did a nice job slowing down Baker freshman Danielle French. The Overland Park, Kan., native managed just four kills on 21 total attempts.

Evangel hit .242 as a team and four Crusaders finished the night with 10 or more kills including Kaley Lyons who had a match high 20.

Each team had nine total team blocks and Shannon Bond led Baker with four block assists and two solo blocks.
