Volleyball Splits Northwestern Tourney

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Baker University volleyball team opened up the 2013 season with two victories at the Northwestern College Tournament over the weekend.

The Wildcats split each day of competition with a loss to Dordt in three sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-17) then followed that up with a win over Doane in four sets (25-17, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18).

On Saturday, Baker opened up play with a win over Hastings in four sets (25-15, 25-20, 18-25, 25-21) and then fell to No. 23 ranked Northwestern (25-17, 25-23, 25-20).

The Wildcats struggled offensively against Dordt, managing just a .050 team hitting percentage and didn't have a player with double-digit kills. Freshman setter Hanna Bettge led the team with eight kills and had 23 assists.

Dordt hit .225 in the match and had 20 more digs than the Wildcats with 59. DC also had 13.5 team blocks.

In the 'Cats win over Doane, Bettge had 28 assists and Shannon McCarty had a team high 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .478. Danielle French had six kills and two solo blocks.

Sara Slater had 10 digs, Bettge had 13 digs and senior Renata Dill led the team with 15 digs.

Against Hastings, French had 12 kills to lead the team and Baker hit .248 as a team. Each team had nine team blocks and Dill was all over the floor with 20 digs. Bettge collected 35 assists.

Northwestern had two players with double-digit kills, as Kaitlin Floerchinger had 15 kills and Karlie Schut had 11. Baker had 26 assists from Bettge and as a team Baker had seven total team blocks.

The Wildcats will next take on four matches at the Bellevue University tournament in Bellevue, Neb., on Aug. 30-Aug. 31.
