In cold, muddy, and rainy conditions Monday and Tuesday, the Baker University Women's Golf team got a head-to-head look at the NAIA #5-ranked William Woods University Varsity squad. Baker finished third behind William Woods' varsity and junior varsity squads but did defend its HAAC Conference #1 ranking versus all other conference opponents, defeating nearest competitors Graceland University by 35 strokes and host Central Methodist by 36 strokes.
Freshman Lindsey Mateer led all BU and HAAC Conference competitors with daily scores of 83 on the par-72 course to finish 8th overall, behind seven William Woods golfers. Senior Rachel Strecker posted scores of 83-88.
Head coach Karen Exon was pleased with the effort by the BU women's squad. The Monday first-round yielded the best team score of the 2012-2013 season, 346 with Mateer, Strecker and freshman Rebecca Holder scoring identical 83's.
Senior Bristol Brandt's 97 counted for the final score. Coach Exon was pleased with the way the Wildcats handled the wet weather conditions even though second-round scores rose by 17 strokes.
The women's team is back in action for its final regular season tournament April 24-25, Wednesday-Thursday at its home course Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. That tournament will shotgun-start both days at 8 a.m.

Although the Baker men's golf varsity squad finished third this week at the Central Methodist University spring invitational to HAAC Conference squads Central Methodist and Evangel, the team continues to lead the HAAC Conference 2012-2013 team rankings by a 7-stroke led over Evangel.
The Wildcats were led by sophomore Kelley Thompson's 1-under-par first round 71 and second-round 75. Thompson finished T-4 and after a score-card playoff with the other two T-4 competitors Thompson was awarded the 5th place individual trophy.
Senior Mason Dick posted strong scores of 76-74 on the par-71 men's course.
Freshman Grant Grego posted a strong first-round score of 73 but ran into trouble in the second round, as his score did not factor for the second round team score and sophomore Zach Pickett led the JV squad in scoring with rounds of 81 and 73.
"I was especially pleased with the overall play of Kelley Thompson, Mason Dick and Alex Zuzelski," said Exon. "Thompson has been methodical and steady all year long as he settles into college golf and realizes that he can compete well. Mason Dick is beginning to live up to his potential as he closes out his senior campaign and seeks to earn qualification to the 2013 Men's National Championship. Zuzelski was steady with identical 78's as he works to overcome issues with play in wet, muddy and brutally cold conditions."
Sophomore Zach Pickett put up a steady round Tuesday with two bogeys and 16 pars to shot 2-over 73.
