MARSHALL, Mo. - The Baker women have finally gotten a spring golf tournament under their belt after a long and snowy winter. The BU Women played the Missouri Valley College tournament, a two-day 36-hole tournament, short-handed on account of injury and illness. October Coach's Corner
Although young, the BU women’s golf team has finished the fall 2009 season with two first-place team trophies in our three fall tournament competitions by winning the final fall tournament, the October 19-20 Missouri Valley College Fall Invitational at Indian Foot Hills Golf Course in Marshall, Mo.
Windy conditions both days contributed to higher than usual scores. Sophomore Stacy Yowell was tied for second after the first round with a 14-over-par round of 86 and 3 strokes behind the first-place individual. Juniors Dani Weimholt and Krista Yaktine led the second round scoring 85 and 86 respectively. Yaktine placed third individually for the tournament. Ironically, the final fall tournament was the first time that all six BU golfers had been healthy and available for competition.
“The second round team score of 359 at Missouri Valley is more in line with what we should be shooting for a team score, but still on the high side. I think that we are capable of averaging team rounds in the high 330s to 340s as a team. I look forward to the fall and winter where golfers can work at our indoor practice nets on alignment, proper swing plane, partial shots, and putting techniques. Likewise our players will be able to undertake a strength and conditioning program that has been designed by the BU strength and conditioning coach. I am very pleased with the team chemistry of our 2009-2010 team. They get along well and work hard in the classroom and on the golf course. We all look forward to a solid spring season,” coach Karen Exon said.
