Women's Squad Looks to Defend Title

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University men’s and women’s cross country teams will host the annual Maple Leaf Invitational this Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Baldwin City Golf Course.

The women’s 4,000-meter race will get started at 10:30 a.m., with the men’s 5,000-meter at approximately 10:55 a.m., and the awards presentation to follow at 11:30 a.m.

12 teams will compete in the women’s race, while 10 men’s teams will challenge for the title on Saturday.

Last season Baker took home first-place in both races and Lauren Jaqua won the women’s race in a time of 15:43, the junior out of Lansing, Kan., will look to defend her title. 

Park University’s Daniel Tubei won last year’s Maple Leaf Invitational in a time of 15:26 he will be back for the Pirates as well. 

The Wildcats top finisher a year ago was Aaron Caldwell, he ran the 5K in a time of 16:32 and placed seventh.

Seven Wildcats finished in the top 20 in the men’s race last season, including Caldwell, Eric Larson, Taylor Nall, Chris Scheidman, Vincent Tadokoro, Corey Clark and Chris Duderstadt. Five of those seven return to Baker this season. 

On the women’s side in the 2011 race, six Wildcats finished in the top 13 spots including, Jaqua, Ashley McBride, Kerry Kurta, Jenna Stanbrough, Lindsey Brown and Megan Rosa. All six return this season.
