Baker qualifies two more wrestlers for NAIA Nationals

MITCHELL, S.D. - The Baker wrestlers competed on the road for the first time this season at the Dakota Wesleyan University Open in Mitchell, SD, on Saturday.

Twenty-six Baker University wrestlers competed in the open tournament. In attendance were NAIA schools Concordia University, Briar Cliff University, Dakota Wesleyan University, Dana College, Dickinson State University, Hastings College, Jamestown College, Northwestern College, Morningside College, University of Sioux Falls, University of Regina, William Penn University and York College. Also in attendance were Division II Augustana College and Northern State University as well as Minnesota West Community College and Ridgewater Community College.

The Wildcats were highlighted by two place-winners. Billy Benz, from Gardner, Kan., finished seventh in the 125-pound weight class and became the sixth Baker wrestler to qualify for the national championships this season. Freshman Nathan Sommer, from Parker, Kan., joined Benz as a national qualifier by making it to the 7th-8th-place match before defaulting to eighth place in the 157-pound weight class because of injury.

With the two placers this weekend, Baker University has qualified seven wrestlers for the NAIA national championships in their first two weeks of competition. The NAIA allows each team to bring 12 wrestlers to the national championships.

The Wildcat wrestlers will not get much rest before their meet Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Collins Center, hosting another first-year program, Concordia University from Seward, Neb. This is a rare event with two first-year programs competing against each other in a dual meet.
