ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Baker University wrestling team traveled to Maryville University (Mo.) this past weekend to compete in the Maryville-Kaufman Brand Open. Baker finished the tournament with seven top eight finishes in a tournament featuring NCAA DI, DII, NJCAA, and NAIA teams.

“We had a strong showing at this tournament,” said head coach Jimmy May. “Our kids worked hard and we were pleased with the number of Baker fans out there showing support. It’s great to see our athletes, coaches, and fans getting excited during these matches. Baker wrestling definitely made its presence known this weekend in St. Louis.”

At 125 pounds, freshman Bo Newport came away with a third place finish after starting with a 4-0 decision in his opening match with a pin over Purdue’s Dominique Price in the quarterfinals before falling to the University of Missouri’s Alan Waters in the semifinal. Newport bounced back with a second pin over Missouri Valley’s returning NAIA All-American Paulie Hansen, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Newport finished the tournament with a 4-0 decision in the consolation finals to secure a third place finish.

Senior Jarell Price finished with a sixth place finish at 149 pounds. Juniors Jacob Nowak (197 pounds) and Dylan Berg (heavyweight) all came home with fifth place finishes. Juniors Nathan Sommers (165 pounds) and Jarid Price (197 pounds) finished in seventh place in their respective weight classes.

Junior heavyweight Brandon Gebhardt closed out the day with a second place finish after falling to the University of Missouri’s top heavyweight by decision. Gebhardt recorded two falls on his way to the finals, along with 3-1 and 9-4 decisions.

“Our kids were in a lot of battles against tough competition and they fought hard,” said assistant wrestling coach Levi Calhoun. “I’m very happy with our performance and very proud of our athletes effort.”
