Wrestling Quarterfinals

DES MOINES, Iowa – After the first day of the 2012 NAIA Wrestling National Championships, Baker University sits in ninth place after two sessions at the Jacobson Exhibition Center.

Baker advanced five wrestlers through to Friday’s quarterfinals and will have the remaining five wrestlers battling through the wrestlebacks.

141 pound Joel Olivas will face Anthony Varnell of the University of Great Falls, 165 pound Nathan Sommer will go up against Kevin Hardy of Oklahoma Christian.

184 pounders Jarid Price and Robert Shadrach were the only duo of Baker wrestlers in the same weight class to advance to the quarterfinals. Price will go up against Derrick Rottenberg and Shardrach will face Austin Vanderford, both of Southern Oregon.

Brandon Gebhardt looks to anchor Baker against Joe Kent of Missouri Baptist in Friday’s quarterfinals.

“We’ve got the majority of our guys still out there competing,” said Baker head coach Jimmy May. “I was happy with the way we all performed on the first day. Everyone came out ready to battle.”

Alan Callahan, AJ Gassman, Jarid Price, Dylan Berg, and Parker Owen will attempt to make it though their respective weight class wrestlebacks.
