HAYS, Kan. – The Baker University wrestling team competed against some of the top wrestlers in the Midwest over the weekend at the Bob Smith Open hosted by Fort Hays State University.

Several wrestlers shined on the mat for the Wildcats, but none brighter than Bryce Shoemaker.

The freshman wrestler won the 133-pound division after winning all four of his matches that included three-straight without a point scored against him. He then claimed a 2-1 win over Carter McHelhany of Air Force in the title match.

Nick Haugen also performed well for the No. 14 ranked Wildcats picking up two wins in the 157-pound class. He defeated Drake Martel of Northeastern Oklahoma 6-2 and then defeated Colton Johnson of Nebraska-Kearney by a 5-4 decision. He ended his day due to injury in the semifinals against Joseph Baucke of Air Force who eventually won the 157-pound title.

John Hambleton had an impressive 2-0 victory over Nebraska-Kearney's Mark Fiala in the 184-pount category and Connor Middleton had a 6-0 decision win over Wentworth's Alex Davis-Carter in the 149-pound class.

Baker will compete in its final competition of the semester this Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.
