BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Named after former Baker University head coach Jimmy May, the No. 19 ranked Baker University wrestling team competed in the first annual Jimmy May-hem Open on Saturday inside the Collins Center.

The Wildcats were again highlighted by freshman 133-pound wrestler Bryce Shoemaker, as the Baldwin City, Kan., native pinned his way to the championship round.

He won the 133-pound bracket with a pin in just 34 seconds in his first match of the day against Damion Walls an unattached wrestler and then followed that up with a pin of Kevin Bonilla of Missouri Valley. He won the bracket by pinning fellow teammate AJ Gassman in 2:42. Gassman took second in the 133-pound division.

The Wildcats were represented well in the 141-pound bracket, as Nathan Garcia advanced all the way to the final bout and finished in second-place. He fell to unattached wrestler Kyle Wilson and Josh Wolfe took home third-place for the Wildcats.

Nick Haugen took second for BU in the 149-pound class. He pinned Courtney Strauss of Bethany in a time of 2:45, then fell by major decision, 9-1, to Bethany's Victory Hughes in the title bout.

Baker's John Hambleton finished second in the 184-pound bracket with wins over Hayden Deblieck of Central Methodist and pinned unattached wrestler Roman Garcia.
