BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The No. 18 ranked Baker University wrestling team defeated No. 15 Wayland Baptist, 28-19, on Saturday afternoon.

After losses in the 125 and 133 pound classes, Baker rallied off five straight wins including a pin by Tyler Dickman over Gabe Perez in 2:18 in the 141-pound bout.

Victor Hughes then won via pin in 4:58 over Kane Lovvom in the 149-pound dual. Colby Crank picked up a pin of his own in 1:20 in his win over Victor Thomas in the 157-pound class.

In the 165-pound bout Connor Middleton defeated Tommy Rosen-St. John by major decision, 10-2.

Trevor Sutton also won in the 174-pound class by a gritty 5-4 decision and Kyler Atwood won his 197-pound battle over David Willoughby, SV-1, 5-3.

“We battled tough against a team that has had a lot of success this year, winning 6 of the 9 match ups with bonus points coming in 4 of those matches,” said head coach Cody Garcia. “Even in the matches against ranked opponents, we seemed to rise to the occasion with pins from Victor and Colby, and even a big lead against the No. 5 ranked wrestler at 133 lbs.

“Before having a momentary lapse that ended the match. With this being the last tune up before post-season, it definitely should give us some confidence to finish what we started.”

No. 18 Baker Takes Third at Kansas Cup http://www.bakeru.edu/sports/wrestling/news-archive/item/11831-no-18-baker-takes-third-at-kansas-cup http://www.bakeru.edu/sports/wrestling/news-archive/item/11831-no-18-baker-takes-third-at-kansas-cup Connor Middleton won the 165-pound bracket at the Kansas Cup on Sunday

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 18 ranked Baker University took third place out of 12 competing teams at the 2016 Kansas Cup tournament, hosted by Newman University.

NCAA Division II Forth Hays State and Newman finished ahead in first and second places respectively. Forth Hays State finished with 133.5 points, while Newman finished with 112 points and Baker had 107.5 points.

Highlighting Baker’s tournament includes 149-pound wrestler Victor Hughes who won the 149-pound bracket with a 1-0 victory over FHSU’s Bradley Little in the championship round.

Connor Middleton also took home first place in the 165-pound bracket. With a 4-1 win over Neosho CC’s Colton Looper in the championship match.

"It was great to see both of our finalists finish things off the right way," said head coach Cody Garcia. "Both of them were able to do the things that eluded us all morning by winning hard fought, close matches. Finishing like that helps get the bitter taste out of our mouth from the tough losses and points we left behind with guys we left back and the two that were forced out with injury defaults. Overall, each wrestler knows we need to use the next few weeks to sharpen and put ourselves in a position to wrestle at a high level heading into postseason."

No. 18 Wrestling Takes on No. 5 Missouri Valley in Dual http://www.bakeru.edu/sports/wrestling/news-archive/item/11827-no-18-wrestling-takes-on-no-5-missouri-valley-in-dual http://www.bakeru.edu/sports/wrestling/news-archive/item/11827-no-18-wrestling-takes-on-no-5-missouri-valley-in-dual No. 18 Wrestling Takes on No. 5 Missouri Valley in Dual

MARSHALL, Mo. – The newly ranked No. 18 Baker University wrestling team took on No. 5 ranked Missouri Valley on the road on Thursday night and fell to the Vikings, 26-9.

Baker earned three wins including a victory by No. 14 ranked 149-pound wrestler Victor Hughes took down No. 6 ranked Kenny Boyd, by a 2-1 decision.

Colby Watters also won in the 141-pound weight class with a 8-4 decision past Noah Reid.

Tanner Ogden picked up the final win for the Wildcats on Thursday night with his 6-1 decision victory in the 157-pound dual against Chase Krutzky.

“We competed well but still haven't figured out how to battle through the tough moments and be gritty in matches,” said Baker head wrestling coach Cody Garcia. “When you are competing against a good team, it's not supposed to be easy and we need to believe we train too hard to quit in positions. These close matches are the ones we need if we want to win big duals. We had three solid wins including a big win with Victor Hughes beating the No. 6 wrestler in the nation, but it would have been good to see us finish off the 3 matches we let slip away.”

This dual marked the first time this season the Wildcats had competed as a ranked team in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 20 poll, as they came in ranked No. 18 this week.

Crank Wins 149 Pound Bracket, Baker Finishes Ninth at MVC Invite http://www.bakeru.edu/sports/wrestling/news-archive/item/11811-crank-wins-149-pound-bracket-baker-finishes-ninth-at-mvc-invite http://www.bakeru.edu/sports/wrestling/news-archive/item/11811-crank-wins-149-pound-bracket-baker-finishes-ninth-at-mvc-invite Trevor Sutton and the Wildcats will compete for the second time at home on Feb. 2 in a dual with Ottawa

MARSHALL, Mo.The Baker University wrestling team competed in the prestigious Missouri Valley Invite over the weekend and finished in ninth place with 83.5 team points in a field of 28 teams.

149-pound wrestler Colby Crank had an impressive showing over the weekend with his first place finish.

The senior from Hutchinson, Kansas rolled through the bracket with three pins and defeated Williams Baptist' Patrick Grigsby by a 5-2 decision in the championship bout.

Tyler Dickman picked up a couple of wins in the 141-pound bracket and finished in 8th-place.

Tanner Ogden had a solid showing in the 157-pound division with his fifth-place finish. He defeated William Penn’s Christian Padilla via Fall in 2:59 to win the fifth-place bout.

Another Baker newcomer that shined for the Wildcats was Victor Hughes. He took 7th in the 149 pound division and knocked off the No. 8 ranked wrestler to advance in his bracket along the way.

“We had a solid weekend against high-level competition that was highlighted by the inspired effort and performance of many of our guys," said head coach Cody Garcia. "There were multiple nationally ranked wrestlers at each weight and they embraced the opportunity to rise to the challenge.  As excited as I was to see them finish where they did, I was even more impressed in the manner they did it. As a team, we scored over 29 points of bonus and Crank, Dickman, Ogden and Hughes led the way in setting that tone and imposing their will on opponents. Those 29 points were the equivalent of having 2 more finalists. Not only were they working for falls, but they were initiating offense constantly and creating a pace that was unmatched. This is what Baker Wrestling needs to look like and they epitomized the core.”

Baker will head back to Marshall, Missouri on Jan. 21 for a dual with the Vikings, before competing in the Kansas Cup at Newman University on Jan. 24.

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University wrestling team competed in the University of Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open over the weekend.

“We competed well, in places, at a tough competition but started to show the attrition that comes with competing in these types of events each of the last four weekends,” said head coach Cody Garcia. “Tyler Dickman was our ironman for the weekend as he had an impressive run through the backside to come back and take 4th in a tough bracket and end the day with an incredible 7-2 record.

“This marks the end of the first phase of our season and feel like we accomplished our goals for using this month as a chance to deepen, get quality looks, and have a better idea on what we need to do moving forward. We have matches under our belt and should be confident in our conditioning. We will get the weekend off and look to get a few guys healed up for after the break.”

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The (RV) Baker University wrestling team opened up its 2015-16 season on Sunday with the annual Dan Harris Open inside the Collins Center.

133-pound wrestler Zane Baugh highlighted the day for Baker with his first-place finish.

Tyler Dickman took home third-place in the 141-pound bracket, while Josh Ortiz also finished in third place in the 184-pound division.

“This event is an awesome way to start our season and welcome fans and family to watch us begin our journey,” said Baker head wrestling coach Cody Garcia. “We have really tried to emphasize defining and representing our core through the preseason and it was visible in our performance. These guys brought a battle each time they stepped to the line and seemed to respond to the challenges.

“As a group, we seem to be holding great position and creating winnable opportunities in key situations. This was just a part of the process, but we are excited to see the confidence in the preparation.”

Baker will next compete on Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Central Missouri Open in Warrensburg, Missouri.
