Wrestling signs Prarie View standout Bo Newport
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Bo Newport has signed a national letter of intent to join the Wildcat wrestling team for the 2011-12 season, head coach Jimmy May announced recently. Newport comes as a true freshman from La Cygne, Kansas to a Baker squad that loses just two seniors.
“Bo is an outstanding young man and he is going to be a great addition to our wrestling program,” said head wrestling coach Jimmy May.
Newport enjoyed a successful four-year career at Prairie View High School. A four-year letter winner and state qualifier, Newport posted a 164-35 record while finishing second in the 4A state championships.

Gardner standout Litvak signs with Baker wrestling
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Baker University wrestling coach Jimmy May announced the signing of Zach Litvak to a national letter of intent on Tuesday afternoon.
Litvak, a native of Gardner, Kan., comes to the Wildcats from Gardner-Edgerton High School where he was a three-time state qualifier. He compiled a 79-48 overall record during his time as a Blazer.
“He stays consistent with our philosophy of recruiting quality people from quality families,” said head coach Jimmy May. “He’s pretty much a local kid with a very supportive family that has been heavily involved in his career.”

All-Americans set the bar for future Baker wrestlers
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Baker University wrestling team is yet again soaring to new heights in just its second year of existence. For the first time in the programs history, two wrestlers were named NAIA All-Americans this past weekend at the NAIA Wrestling National Championships. All-America status is automatically earned if a wrestler advances to the championship round on day two.
149 pound Jarell Price (Las Vegas, Nev.) advanced to the quarterfinal round before being knocked out by Jefferey Pelton (Notre Dame College). Pelton was defeated in the semifinals by Matt Burns (Grandview).

Calhoun and Price advance to Championship Round at NAIA Nationals
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – (Updated Team Standings and Brackets | PDF) After day one of action, the Baker University wrestling team sits in 17th place overall at the 2011 NAIA Wrestling National Championships with 9.5 points.
Sophomore Jarell Price (Las Vegas, Nev.) and senior Levi Calhoun (Moore, Okla.) highlighted the Baker squad, as they were the only two wrestlers to advance to the championship round on Friday. In the 149-pound match, Price will collide with 2010 champion Jefferey Pelton (Notre Dame, Ohio). As for the heavyweights, Levi Calhoun will face Orlando Scales (Notre Dame, Ohio) in his quarterfinal match.

2011 NAIA Wrestling National Championships Brackets Announced
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - (Brackets | PDF) Official brackets for the 2011 NAIA Wrestling National Championships have been released. Action in the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will get underway Thursday at 11 a.m. CST. The 54th annual event will consist of six sessions, concluding on Saturday with the championship finals.

Baker wrestlers take third at NAIA Central Regional
MARSHALL, Mo. – The Baker University wrestling team continues to move up the national ranks.
The Wildcat wrestlers placed third over the weekend at the NAIA Central Regional, beating out national powers No. 17 Waldorf (Iowa) and No. 14 Oklahoma City.
Josh Haugen, a 133-pounder from Claremore, Okla., and Nathan Sommer, a 157-pounder from Parker, Kan., led the Baker grapplers, advancing to the semifinals in their respective weight classes. AJ Gassman, a 125-pounder from Belton, Mo., nearly defeated No. 7 Alex Peitz (Grand View, Iowa) in the third-place match but fell late in the match on a reversal.

Baker wrestling defeats NCAA DII Newman in commanding fashion
WICHITA, Kan. – The Baker University wrestling team remains unblemished in dual meets. Baker defeated Newman University 34-12 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 7-0 on the season and 11-0 all-time.
Jordan McGuire (Edmond, Okla.) won by forfeit to give Baker its first points of the afternoon and from that point forward Baker won five-straight matches to seal the victory.

Wrestling dual cancelled due to inclement weather
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Due to the inclement weather, William Penn University (Iowa) has been forced to cancel their dual tonight with No. 20 Baker University.
Baldwin High School is also closed; therefore the high school will not be participating in the double dual as planned.
