Baker University captures first-ever Kansas Cup
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – In just its third year of existence as a program, the Baker University wrestling team has been crowned the champ in the state of Kansas.
Junior Brandon Gebhardt (Sparks, Nev.) was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler after recording three victories, with the most notable victory coming in the finals over NCAA DII Fort Hays State standout Justin Glenn.
Senior Jarell Price (Las Vegas, Nev.) entered Sunday ranked No. 3 in the NAIA at 149 pounds, and didn’t disappoint as he was crowned a champion in the 149 pound weight class after knocking off Kane Lavvorn of Colby Community College with a fall at 4:21 in the finals.

Newport, Owen and Gebhardt lead Wildcats at Viking/Warrior Open
FREEMONT, Neb. – The Baker University wrestlers continue to pace themselves for a run at the 2012 NAIA Wrestling National Championships. This past weekend the Wildcats traveled to the Viking/Warrior Open in Freemont, Neb., and had three Wildcats finish at the top of their respective weight classes.
Freshman Bo Newport battled through the day with a 7-1 decision in his final match, notching a title in the 125 pound weight class. Junior Parker Owen finished the day 4-0 and was a champion in the 174 pound weight class. Junior Brandon Gebhardt highlighted the day though, recording four first period pins on his way to the 285 pound title.

Baker wrestling team gains experience at Cliff-Keen National Duals
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The tenth ranked Baker University wrestling team traveled to Springfield, Ill., last weekend to compete in the prestigious NWCA Cliff Keen National Duals, where the Wildcats saw top-ranked teams from the NCAA DII, NCAA DIII, NAIA, and NJCAA.
Baker opened up the competition against No. 7 Midland University, winning six out of ten matches. Phillip Henes (141 pounds), Jarell Price (149 pounds), Nathan Sommer (157 pounds), Parker Owen (174 pounds), Jocob Nowak (197 pounds), and heavyweight Dylan Berg all recorded victories. Berg’s 3-1 overtime victory over top-ranked Leviticus Roberson highlighted the match. Unfortunately, the Wildcats fell just short and dropped the opening dual 19-18.

Baker wrestling climbs to highest-ever ranking in Top 20 Poll
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In just their third season of existence, the Baker University wrestling team has cracked the NAIA Top 10 rankings. Baker moved up four spots after being ranked No. 14 in the previous NAIA Wrestling Coaches’ Top 20 Poll. The Wildcats jumped No. 11 Missouri Valley College and No. 12 Missouri Baptist.
Baker also boasts four individually ranked wrestlers. 125-pound freshman Bo Newport currently sits at No. 6, senior Jarell Price moved up to No. 2 in the 149-pound weight class, junior Parker Owen is ranked No. 8 in the 174- pound weight class, and junior Dylan Berg climbed three spots up to No. 4 in the heavyweight division.

Baker wrestlers make noise at Maryville Kaufman-Brand Open
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Baker University wrestling team traveled to Maryville University (Mo.) this past weekend to compete in the Maryville-Kaufman Brand Open. Baker finished the tournament with seven top eight finishes in a tournament featuring NCAA DI, DII, NJCAA, and NAIA teams.
“We had a strong showing at this tournament,” said head coach Jimmy May. “Our kids worked hard and we were pleased with the number of Baker fans out there showing support. It’s great to see our athletes, coaches, and fans getting excited during these matches. Baker wrestling definitely made its presence known this weekend in St. Louis.”

Baker wrestlers kick-off grueling weekend against top-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Baker head wrestling coach Jimmy May emphasized pride, honor and tradition with his team this past week in practice. The reason? The Baker University wrestling team, in just its third season of existence will face one of the top programs in the history of NCAA Division I sports on Friday afternoon: The Iowa Hawkeyes.
The Iowa City Wrestling Duals are one of the most elite competitions the young Wildcat wrestling team will participate in this season according to coach May.

Four Baker champions crowned at Bethany Open
LINDSBORG, Kan. – Four wrestlers were crowned champions and 13 others placed this past weekend at the Bethany College Swede Open.
125-pound Bo Newport (pictured, Fontana, Kan.), 149-pounders Jarell Price (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Nick Haugen (Claremore, Okla.), 165-pound Jakob Price (Caney, Kan.), and heavyweight Dylan Berg (Las Vegas, Nev.) were all crowned champions in their respective weight classes.
“It was a good weekend for Baker Wrestling.” said assistant wrestling coach Levi Calhoun. “Our kids are wrestling well, but we need to stay focused and keep working hard to continue improving.”

Parker Owen and Dylan Berg lead Baker wrestlers at 2011 Dan Harris Open
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Senior Dylan Berg (Las Vegas, Nev.) and junior Parker Owen (Carrollton, Texas) led all Baker wrestlers with first-place finishes at the 2011 Dan Harris Open.
184 pound Parker Owen opened with a victory over Cale Hintz of Concordia (Neb.), before moving on to defeat teammates Joseph Pace and Robert Shadrach to take the title.
Berg defeated heavyweights Tyler Smith of Bethany (Kan.), Taylor Poe of Wichita State University, John Close of Fort Hays State, Ivan Loya of Texas Arlington, and Dillon Heesch of Concordia (Neb.).
