DES MOINES, Iowa – After the first day of the 2012 NAIA Wrestling National Championships, Baker University sits in ninth place after two sessions at the Jacobson Exhibition Center.
Baker advanced five wrestlers through to Friday’s quarterfinals and will have the remaining five wrestlers battling through the wrestlebacks.

Wrestlers take fourth at NAIA Central Regional
DES MOINES, Iowa – 184 pound Jarid Price became the first-ever NAIA Regional Champion for Baker University this past weekend at the NAIA Central Regionals.
As a team, Baker finished in fourth place behind No. 1 Grandview, No. 12 Missouri Valley College, and No. 5 Oklahoma City University. Baker currently sits at No. 7 nationally.
Heavyweight Brandon Gebhardt advanced all the way to the finals before bowing by pin to Grandview’s Eric Thompson. By far the most compelling match of the day was at 184 pounds where Jarid Price faced teammate Robert Shadrach with the title at stake. Price won by a decision over Shadrach, 6-5.

No. 7 Baker takes commanding victory over Bethany (Kan.)
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – In the first ever dual between two Kansas NAIA programs, the seventh-ranked Baker University wrestling program came out on top with a commanding 31-9 victory over Bethany (Kan.) on Wednesday evening.
Jake Nowak and Brandon Gebhardt highlighted the dual with back-to-back pins in the 197-pound and heavyweight matches, while senior Jarell Price and Clarence Jordan each claimed victories in their respective matches.
“I was proud of the way our guys battled tonight,” said head Baker wrestling coach Jimmy May. “We’ve got a week off now to prepare ourselves for regionals.”

No. 10 Baker battles, but falls to No. 5 Oklahoma City, 18-15
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University wrestling team nearly pulled off its second biggest upset of the season Wednesday evening, but it wasn’t meant to be as Oklahoma City pulled away in the mid-matches to take an 18-15 victory.
AJ Gassman put the Wildcats on the board first in the 133-pound match with a 8-3 decision over Alvie Killingsworth. Phil Henes added a 6-0 victory in the 141-pound match and third-ranked Jarell Price rolled to a 6-0 victory in the 149-pound match.

Gebhardt named HAAC Wrestler of the Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Junior Brandon Gebhardt of Baker capped off an award-winning weekend by being selected the Heart of America Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Gebhardt was an integral part of a history-making weekend for the Wildcats, who captured their first-ever Kansas Cup in just the third year of the program’s existence. A heavyweight competitor from Sparks, Nev., Gebhardt won all threeof his matches en route to being chosen the Most Oustanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Wildcats ink Olathe football and wrestling standout Connor Middleton
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Just one day after winning its first-ever Kansas Cup, the Baker University wrestling team announced the signing of Olathe Northwest High School standout Connor Middleton.
Middleton, a 5’9 dual athlete in football and wrestling has a well-decorated high school career and looks to continue to pursue two sports while attending college.

Baker University captures first-ever Kansas Cup
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – In just its third year of existence as a program, the Baker University wrestling team has been crowned the champ in the state of Kansas.
Junior Brandon Gebhardt (Sparks, Nev.) was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler after recording three victories, with the most notable victory coming in the finals over NCAA DII Fort Hays State standout Justin Glenn.
Senior Jarell Price (Las Vegas, Nev.) entered Sunday ranked No. 3 in the NAIA at 149 pounds, and didn’t disappoint as he was crowned a champion in the 149 pound weight class after knocking off Kane Lavvorn of Colby Community College with a fall at 4:21 in the finals.

Newport, Owen and Gebhardt lead Wildcats at Viking/Warrior Open
FREEMONT, Neb. – The Baker University wrestlers continue to pace themselves for a run at the 2012 NAIA Wrestling National Championships. This past weekend the Wildcats traveled to the Viking/Warrior Open in Freemont, Neb., and had three Wildcats finish at the top of their respective weight classes.
Freshman Bo Newport battled through the day with a 7-1 decision in his final match, notching a title in the 125 pound weight class. Junior Parker Owen finished the day 4-0 and was a champion in the 174 pound weight class. Junior Brandon Gebhardt highlighted the day though, recording four first period pins on his way to the 285 pound title.
