Baker wrestling adds two for 2010-11

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Two more wrestlers have been added to a team that is already loaded for the 2010-11 campaign.

Elias Parenti (Ottawa, Kan.) comes to Baker as a Kansas State qualifier, Runner-up Kansas State freestyle and three-time honor student during his career at Ottawa High School.

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Baker University Wrestling team has announced six new signings for the 2010 team. Head Coach Jimmy May and his staff are looking to find athletes that can help the program continue to grow in its second season of exisitance. The Wildcat wrestling program gained valuable experience at this year’s national championships. With a very young team, the Baker wrestlers will harness this experience and build on it, looking forward to the 2011 NAIA National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The newest group of signings is as follows.

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Baker University wrestling team has signed Jordan Basks, Da'Koda Basks, Blake Mallory, Beau Bennett, Trevor Boyer and Todd Curtis to National Letters of Intent, coach Jimmy May announced on Monday.

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - Baker University head wrestling coach Jimmy May announced the signing of Phillip Henes a Labette Community College transfer.

Henes hails from the tradition-rich St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Overland Park, Kan.), where he was the 2008 Kansas State Champion and 2007 runner-up.

"Phillip is going to be an outstanding addition to our wrestling program, not only does he do-it-all on the mat, he has a stellar academic background," stated coach May.

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - After successfully completing his first season as head coach, Jimmy May wasted no time in hitting the recruiting trail this off-season. He didn't have to travel far. Baldwin High School standout Josh Hanson signed a letter of intent on April 2, 2010.

Hanson, a three-time state qualifier for the Bulldogs, placed third at state as a senior, owning a 43-9 record. Hanson is one of only seven BHS wrestlers to win 40 matches in a season. He also finished with 126 career wins, placing fifth on BHS' all-time wins list.

Baker wrestlers close out inaugural season at NAIA ChampionshipsLevi Calhoun

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Baker University completed its inaugural wrestling season this past week at the 53rd Annual NAIA National Championships on the campus of Oklahoma City University. The Wildcats qualified 10 wrestlers for the championships. The Baker wrestlers placed 28th out of 38 teams in the competition.

The Wildcats were led by senior Levi Calhoun (285, Oklahoma City). Calhoun opend the championships with a huge victory over the fifth-rated heavyweight in the nation from the University of Great Falls. Calhoun followed up that victory with a second-round 3-2 decision over Willie Hernandez from Jamestown College. With that win, Calhoun advanced to the quarterfinals against Chas Maloch from McKendree College. Calhoun was 1-1 against Maloch during the regular season before losing a hard-fought battle 5-3 in the quarters.
