What is a Direct Admit Nursing program?
With a nationwide shortage of nurses, and an increased demand for travel nurse candidates, the direct admit nursing program is a smart first step in securing an essential health care job. As a direct admit nursing student, you’ll experience the joys and challenges of a nursing education before you fully commit to nursing school.
The best of both worlds: as a direct admit nursing student you’ll get to enjoy two years of the traditional undergraduate experience before you pursue a nursing career. So get ready to participate in everything from clubs and organizations to fraternity and sorority life. You can even participate in varsity athletics!

Why direct admit nursing at Baker University?
The road to becoming a registered nurse starts at our Baldwin City campus, where you’ll complete your 62 hours of prerequisite classes while working closely with a direct admit nursing advisor. Then you’ll go on to complete your two-year professional program on our campus at Stormont Vail Health in Topeka, which is designated a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

You can expect NCLEX tutoring and lots of NCLEX review questions. Preferred Admission to the School of Nursing
Once you complete the prerequisites from the College of Arts and Sciences, you’ll be eligible for priority admission to the School of Nursing if you meet the following criteria*.
In addition, you must meet the admission requirements as stated in the current School of Nursing catalog (at the time of application).
- Meet the nursing school requirements of 40 or more hours from CAS
- Have at least 12 semester hours of science credits, including anatomy and physiology, from CAS
- Have an overall prerequisite cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
- Have at least a 3.0 GPA in math and science courses
- Upon admission to CAS, students must take the remaining prerequisite courses at CAS
*Applicants who do not meet the criteria for priority admission will be considered for admission with all other applicants.

The following prerequisite general education courses are offered on the Baldwin City campus. They also may be transferred from a two-year or four-year regionally accredited college or university.
- Public Speaking (3 hours)
- English I (3 hours)
- English II (3 hours)
- Humanities, Fine Arts, Religion, Social Science (12 hours) No more than 6 hours in any one discipline: literature, history, foreign language, sign language, art, music, dance, theater, philosophy, religion, sociology, anthropology, government, geology, or geography
- General Psychology (3 hours)
- Developmental Psych, Human Development (3 hours)
- College Algebra (3 hours)
- Statistics (3 hours)
- Anatomy with lab* (4 hours)
- Physiology with lab* (4 hours)
- Microbiology with lab* (4 hours)
- Chemistry with lab* (4 hours)
- Nutrition* (3 hours)
- *These courses must have been successfully completed within the past 10 years.
