Overview

The Library Information Science (LIS) minor gives students the opportunity to explore how information is created, organized, accessed, and used in society, with an emphasis on professional possibilities in librarianship. Students gain foundational knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience through coursework and a required practicum.

Why Minor in Library Information Science?

This minor helps students:

  • Apply theory and skills through supervised practicum experiences

Program Learning Goals

Students completing the LIS minor will:

  • Demonstrate information literacy and research skills
  • Understand library services, outreach, and user engagement
  • Apply LIS concepts in real-world library, archive, or museum settings
  • Develop a foundation for future professional or graduate study in LIS-related fields

Minor Requirements (18 Credit Hours)

  • All students complete the following foundational courses:

    • LIS 110 – Reading Roundtable
    • LIS 115 – Library Outreach and User Services
    • LIS 120 – Library Research & Technology Skills
    • LIS 250 – Introduction to Library Information Science
    • LIS 300 – Introduction to Information Literacy
      or
      LIS 310 – Introduction to Health Information Literacy
      (LIS 310 is available to students majoring in Applied Health Sciences or minoring in Health Humanities.)
    • LIS 350 – Practicum

    Students complete a supervised practicum in a public library, academic library, school library, archive, museum, or special library. The practicum allows students to apply classroom learning to professional library and information settings.

  • Students select two elective courses, one from each group below:

    Elective Group A (choose one):

    • Introduction to Museum Studies
    • Children’s Literature
    • Young Adult Literature
    • Introduction to Literature
    • Introduction to Fiction
    • The Self and Society in Primary Texts
    • Illness and Meaning in Primary Texts

    Elective Group B (choose one):

    • World Literature
    • Multi-Ethnic American Literature
    • Minority Voices in Primary Texts

Career & Academic Pathways

The Library Information Science minor complements majors in education, humanities, social sciences, and health-related fields. It also provides a strong foundation for students considering graduate study in Library and Information Science or related disciplines.
