Network Services

Wireless connectivity is available in the residence halls, apartments, Collins Library and Harter Union. Because this is new to all of us, we are starting out in a few select buildings on campus to get a sense of how well it works before we expand to other buildings. We need your feedback on the reliability of your connections and whether we have enough capacity to handle the amount of traffic. During this pilot phase, we cannot guarantee that the wireless connection will always be reliable.

If you are interested in using the wireless network, here are a few points about using the service:

  1. You will still have hard wiring for Internet connections in dorm rooms and apartments. We recommend you use these when you are in your room because wired connections are always faster, more secure and more reliable. You need an Ethernet card and Category 5 patch cable with RJ45 connectors 10 to 25 feet long for your laptop to use the wired connections.
  2. To use the wireless access, you need a wireless card for your laptop.
  3. If you live off campus, wireless will be available to you in the library and the union. You need to register your laptop on the network the first time you connect (see instructions for network registration below).
  4. Please report your experience with the wireless to the Help Desk by submitting an online Help Desk request.
  5. Some items may cause interference to wireless connections. We will monitor how to identify these situations, which are difficult to detect because they are intermittent.
    • Cordless phones operating at 2.4Ghz. All traffic on the affected wireless access point will cease during a phone call on one of these phones. Please check your phone to make sure it does not operate on this frequency so you do not interfere with your friends' Internet connections.
    • Some microwave ovens may have "leaks" and cause interference if they run on the 2.4Ghz frequency.
  6. No personal access points will be permitted for use on the Baker network in order to avoid confusion about which service to connect to by others and to enhance our ability to trouble-shoot problems.

Network Registration for Students

Returning students who lived in the residence halls and apartments will be familiar with the registration process; however, it is being enhanced and expanded for registering laptops for wireless as well. The following are key points about the network registration process:

  1. All PCs, Macs, and laptops are required to be registered for use in residence halls, apartments and on the wireless portion of the network. If you plan to use both wired and wireless, the process will register you for each service. This is a one-time procedure for each service for the academic year.
  2. When you first plug in your machine using the wired portion of the network or try to connect to the wireless network, you will be presented with a registration screen that requires you to log on with your last name and SSN.
  3. The process will step you through the policy screens and will run diagnostics on your machine, checking for configured anti-virus software. If you do not have antivirus software, the system will instruct you to download and configure antivirus software licensed by Baker for your use. You cannot use the Baker network without running virus protection.
  4. The process will then check to make sure you have loaded all of the current Microsoft updates (PCs only).
  5. The process will then check for spyware on your machine.

We may institute a virus check upon your return from breaks or at times of high virus activity on the Internet.

  • Download free spyware-detection software to your PC and clean off the spyware. Baker recommends using two or three because it takes several to detect all forms of spyware. Ad-aware, Spybot and Spyware Blaster are available for free at in their Spyware Center.
