Baker University Wetlands

Collect as many organisms as you can in a unique learning environment, perfect for increased exploration and education about biological and ecological processes.

Study the organisms in the lab at the Baker Wetlands Discovery Center.

Schedule of Activities

  • 8 – 8:30 a.m. Meet and greet, light breakfast in Discovery Center
  • 8:30 – 8:45 a.m. Introductions and dividing into teams:
    Birds
    Reptiles and Amphibians
    Mammals and Stream Invertebrates
    Fish
    Insects
    Terrestrial Microanimals
    Aquatic Microanimals
    Vegetation
  • 8:45 a.m. – Noon Blitz the Wetlands!
  • Noon – 12:30 p.m. Lunch in the Discovery Center
  • 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Teams sort collections and organize data and prepare a short slide show of day’s activities
  • 2 – 2:45 p.m. Team presentations of data and slide show-and-tell
  • 2:45 – 3 p.m. Break
  • 3 – 3:30 p.m. Team presentations of data and slide show-and-tell
  • 3:30 – 4 p.m. Closing remarks

One of the most diverse habitats in Kansas, the Wetlands spans 927 acres and is home to 278 species of birds, 98 other vertebrate species and 487 plant species.
