Clarice L. Osborne Memorial Chapel

The Clarice L. Osborne Memorial Chapel was moved stone by stone from the village of Sproxton, England, to serve as the spiritual center of the university. The chapel was dedicated at Baker in 1996 by Lady Margaret Thatcher, former British prime minister, whose father had preached in the building. Today, weekly university worship services are held at 11 a.m. on Thursdays during the academic year. Services are optional, and no classes or meetings are held at that time. The nondenominational services allow students to stay connected with their spiritual life practices and to explore their beliefs during college.

Originally built in 1864, the Sproxton Methodist Chapel served its members for 124 years. Robert R. Osborne, of Olathe, Kan., generously provided the funding to dismantle, ship and rebuild the chapel, which was renamed to honor his wife, Clarice.

Osborne Chapel is open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment only on the weekends and evenings. Appointments can be set up through the university minister’s office by calling 785.594.4553 to arrange for the chapel to be open for your visit. The university minister’s office and a fellowship area for students are located in the lower level of the chapel.

The Rev. Kevin Hopkins

Minister to the University

A regular participant in music camps on the Baldwin City campus during his youth, the Rev. Kevin Hopkins returned to Baker University in 2014 to serve as Minister to the University. Known as RevKev, Hopkins was the senior pastor at Leavenworth (Kan.) First United Methodist Church from 2009 to 2014.

“I have been affiliated with several private colleges in Kansas, and Baker has always been the school that is highly respected by other regional schools,” says Hopkins, originally from Hutchinson, Kan. “For the past several years now, I have felt God calling me to return to campus ministry.”

His experience in campus ministry includes stints at Grace United Methodist Church on Southwestern College’s campus in Winfield, Kan., and as dean of students and campus pastor at Kansas Wesleyan in Salina, Kan. He previously held faith-based leadership positions at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

“I embraced my calling to serve God because of my involvement in campus ministry,” he says. “I have always felt called to serve on a campus and give back. I hope I can help students juggle academic and social expectations while at the same time encourage them to grown in their faith.”

Hopkins earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and a Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. Hopkins and his wife, Joni, have six children. His interests include running, playing basketball, Ping-Pong and racquetball.
