Role Summary
Dr. Nicholaus Pumphrey serves as Chair & Professor of History, Culture & Society at Baker University. In this role, he provides academic leadership for the department and teaches courses in religious studies, history, culture, archaeology, and museum studies. His work supports student learning through classroom instruction, field-based research, historical interpretation, and engagement with Baker’s Quayle Bible Collection.

About Dr. Pumphrey
Dr. Nicholaus Pumphrey serves as Chair & Professor of History, Culture & Society at Baker University, with academic work focused on religious studies, archaeology, museum studies, ancient history, and material culture.
His teaching and scholarship connect classroom learning with hands-on opportunities for students to examine historical evidence, interpret artifacts, and engage critically with religious and cultural traditions. Through courses in religious studies, museum studies, archaeology, and related fields, Pumphrey helps students develop analytical, historical, and cross-cultural perspectives.
Pumphrey also serves as curator of Baker’s Quayle Bible Collection, one of the university’s significant historical and academic resources. His work with the collection supports teaching, research, exhibitions, and public engagement with rare biblical and religious texts.
In 2022, Pumphrey received the Jennie Howell Kopke and Verda R. Kopke Award for Distinguished Teaching, which recognizes exemplary faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching and help students grow as scholars.
