Graduate Earns MBA Degree to Advance in Healthcare

Baker University has always been the top choice for Erica Grover. The Baker University School of Nursing was her first choice for a nursing degree, and the School of Professional and Graduate Studies in Kansas City was her first choice when she decided to earn a Master of Business Administration to advance her career in the healthcare industry.

Erica graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Baker in 2002 and began a career as a pediatric nurse at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, soon after graduation. She quickly learned there are endless professional opportunities within the healthcare field and in 2014 started work on her Master of Business Administration through Baker’s flexible online degree program. She graduated in December 2016 with an MBA degree with a concentration in Healthcare. Baker also offers concentrations in Finance and Human Resources, which allows students to tailor a degree program to their interests and strengths.

“My goal is to couple my work experience, a BSN, and a newly acquired MBA degree into a pathway to the business and administration side of healthcare and nursing,” she said. “Completing the MBA degree provided me the knowledge and skills to advance into executive positions in healthcare.”

The decision to go back to school isn’t an easy one, but Erica would encourage others who are thinking of earning a degree to say “yes” to Baker.

“The first and most important reason for choosing Baker University for MBA degree study was my personal experience with my undergraduate degree,” she said. “From experience, I knew Baker had a low student-to-faculty ratio, which helps in undergraduate success. The class size was small, allowing intimate interaction with peers on the same path. This works well for group projects and faculty interaction.”

Erica knew that a Master of Business Administration degree from Baker University would be highly regarded, especially in the healthcare community in Kansas City.

“Baker University and its staff will quickly remind an individual of the excitement of learning,” she said. “Gone are the days of asking, ‘when I will ever use this?’ Pursing a graduate degree results from your desire to gain knowledge and to implement changes and new ideas. You will look back on graduate work as a stimulating time that was worth the effort. The MBA degree has expanded my opportunities in the healthcare industry.”
