Cowherd played an influential role in beginning Baker University’s softball and women’s basketball programs. She was inducted into Baker’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 for her significant contributions to the field of education, recreational health, and sports, and in her achievements in coaching collegiate athletics at Baker. She began her teaching and coaching career at Baldwin High School. After spending time at home with her two sons, she returned to Baker University in 1976 to teach and coach full time. Her chief responsibility was to organize and coach the university’s first softball and women’s basketball programs. She coached basketball from 1976 to 1978 and softball from 1976 to 1983. At the 1981 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Softball Tournament, Baker finished ninth for Division III. The 1982 team finished third. Cowherd loved teaching and coaching, providing the educational and physical tools her students and athletes needed. She also knew that funding was essential and put in place three scholarships at Baker University that support two of her passions: softball and biology. She served on the Baker Board of Trustees.

Dr. John Cammel English, faculty ’65-’97, 83, April 5, 2018, Baldwin City, Kansas. English joined the faculty at Baker University in 1965, was promoted to full professor in 1968, and served as the chairman of the Department of History and Political Science from 1965 to 1973 and from 1983 to 1993. He was responsible especially for courses on English history and the techniques of historical research. He fostered the teaching of Asian civilizations and promoted the humanities’ role in undergraduate education. He played a crucial role in the design of the Shaping of Western Thought program that integrated history, literature, religion, theater, psychology, and philosophy into a two-semester sequence using primary texts that spanned the 5th century through the 20th century. The life and times of John Wesley, the principal founder of Methodism, was the focus of English’s research, and he was the first American invited to deliver the Annual Lecture of the Wesley Historical Society of Great Britain. He was the first recipient of Baker’s Distinguished Scholarship award, and in February 2018 was inducted into the Baker University Faculty Hall of Fame.

Donald E. Parker ’55, 84, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Baker Board of Trustees, April 20, 2018, Lawrence, Kansas. Survivors include his daughter Donna (Parker) Carlson, ’85. Parker served on the Baker University Board of Trustees for 20 years, holding many committee chairs and offices, including Chairman of the Board. While a student at Baker, he was a member of the Letterman Club and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and business in 1955. After graduation, Parker volunteered for the Officer Candidate School (OCS) program of the United States Marine Corps and was awarded commission of Second Lieutenant. He was discharged from active duty in the fall of 1958 as First Lieutenant and served in the reserves for the remainder of his military commitment. In 1959 he joined the Employers Reinsurance Corporation, progressing within the company both in the Kansas City and San Francisco offices. After 35 years, he retired in Kansas City as president of First Excess and Reinsurance Corporation, a subsidiary of Employers Reinsurance. Parker was a member of several United Methodist churches, serving for eight years on the Board of the United Methodist Church for Higher Education in Nashville, Tennessee. Parker established the Paula M. (Dick) Parker Endowed Memorial Scholarship, to honor his first wife, who graduated in 1955 and passed away in 2007. He also established the Charlotte Parker Endowed Honor Scholarship in Nursing to honor is second wife.

Shore served on the Baker Board of Trustees for many years and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. While a student he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll. A dedicated athlete, Shore was an All-Conference guard in football, was a four-time letterman, and served as co-captain of the team. He also was active in intramurals and was named Co-Homecoming King. After graduation he became a pioneer in the health and fitness industry, opening numerous fitness clubs in the region and the southeast, and remained involved in the health club industry for the duration of his career. In the late 1990s, he designed and funded a new weight training facility at Baker, and the George Shore Weight Room, located in Mabee Hall, is named in his honor.

Originally from Great Bend, Kansas, he had a successful career in banking in Kansas City. Philanthropy and extensive volunteer service were a significant and meaningful part of his life, and he served as an officer and board member for many organizations. A personal passion was his lifelong interest in and study of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. Kopke served on the Baker University Board of Trustees from 1996 to 2002. In 1998, he established the Jennie Howell Kopke and Verda R. Kopke Award for Distinguished Teaching, named in honor of his mother, Jennie, a 1921 Baker graduate, and his late wife, Verda. Kope was named an honorary alumnus of Baker University in 2015. He remained dedicated to Baker and its mission throughout his life.

Tom Russell, 97, emeritus professor of art, July 11, 2015, Baldwin City, Kansas. | Known as a charming colleague, thoughtful mentor and excellent artist. Inducted into Baker University’s Faculty Hall of Fame in 2000, Russell was credited with rebuilding the art department, where
he was a professor of art from 1963 to 1982. He previously was an instructor at the Kansas City Art Institute. His longtime friend and colleague Walt Bailey, ’62, fondly remembered Russell. “His students loved him,” Bailey told the Baldwin City Signal. “He was so generous with his time. He wanted students to slow down and look more carefully, even at their own work. He was able to show students things in their own work even
they didn’t see. He wanted them to see and understand.” A memorial service was held Aug. 16 at Holt-Russell Gallery, which is named in his
honor.

She was recognized as an honorary alumna in 1990. The Collins House reception hall was dedicated in her honor in 2006. Her daughter,Kristian, is a 1999 graduate of Baker’s School of Nursing.
