Professional dance company Step Afrika! to perform

Baldwin City, Kan. — The Baker University Artist & Lecture Series will feature the professional dance company Step Afrika! at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Rice Auditorium on the Baldwin City campus.

Step Afrika! is dedicated to the tradition of stepping. The stomp troupe’s program will also include tap, South African dances, clogging, hip-hop, house and freestyle dancing.

The troupe is comprised of young artists from the United States and the South Africa based Soweto Dance Theatre. Based in Washington, D.C., the company has been featured on CNN, PBS and NPR as well as numerous documentaries and articles that examine the tradition of stepping.

As a part of its appearance at Baker University, the dance troupe will teach the art of stepping for Baldwin City elementary students at 11 a.m. Feb. 10, at Rice Auditorium. The program is funded in part by the Mid-America Arts Alliance and the National Endowment for the Arts.
