Broadway at Baker, Music Theatre for Young People to present 'My Favorite Year'
Baldwin City, Kan. — Broadway at Baker and Music Theatre for Young People will present "My Favorite Year at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 14, at Rice Auditorium on the Baldwin City campus. Cary Danielson-Pandzik will direct the musical theater production.
Admission is $8 for adults, and $5 for seniors and children under 12. Tickets are available at the door or by calling (785) 594-8478.
Featuring more than 40 students from area high schools and middle schools, the Broadway at Baker production combines the tuneful Broadway score by the Tony-winning team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and a snappy book by Joseph Dougherty for a classic musical comedy. The scene is set in 1954 and Benjy Stone, a freshman writer on TV's King Kaiser Comedy Cavalcade, is assigned the task of baby-sitting veteran Hollywood swashbuckler Alan Swann while he's doing a live guest appearance on the show. The effort to keep the reckless Swann out of the papers during the rehearsal week nearly drives Benjy to the brink. But when he's given an unexpected glimpse into Swann's broken heart, Benjy begins to discover a thing or two about life and love. In addition to Benjy Stone and Alan Swann, the show is filled with roles for comic actors, from the overbearing Belle Carroca, to the acerbic comedy writer Alice Miller, the role which garnered Andrea Martin a Tony Award.
Students spend seven days on the Baldwin City campus receiving instruction in all aspects of musical theater production before the performance on July 14. Baker faculty members, musical theater veterans and Danielson-Pandzik share their expertise in vocal music, dance and drama.
