Independent review affirms university’s continued accreditation and recognizes ongoing commitment to academic quality and continuous improvement
Baker University, a premier private university rooted in liberal arts education and academic excellence, has successfully completed its Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Mid-Cycle Comprehensive Evaluation, receiving a positive review that continues the university’s accreditation and affirms its commitment to academic excellence, institutional effectiveness, and continuous improvement.
The Higher Learning Commission serves as Baker University's institutional accreditor, evaluating colleges and universities against rigorous standards for academic quality, governance, student success and institutional effectiveness.
“Accreditation gives current and future students and their families confidence that Baker continues to demonstrate its commitment to academic quality and institutional effectiveness,” said Ramie Nation, University Registrar and Advisor to the President for Accreditation. “A successful accreditation review is an opportunity to evaluate how we’re serving students, recognize the progress we’ve made, and identify opportunities to become even stronger.”
The review team highlighted several areas of institutional strengths, including Baker's strong mission alignment, commitment to education, service and civic engagement, comprehensive assessment of student outcomes, expanded student support services and the collaborative redesign of its First-Year Experience involving nearly 70 faculty, staff and students. Evaluators also recognized a renewed culture of transparency and engagement across campus. The reviewers noted that faculty, staff and other campus constituents expressed appreciation for the university's openness in addressing challenges and planning for the future.
“This positive review reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff, and leadership, who work every day to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students," said Baker University President Dr. Jody Fournier. " We're especially encouraged that the review team recognized not only our academic mission, but also the collaborative work happening across campus to strengthen the student experience and our commitment to continuous improvement.”
Baker has maintained continuous accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission since 1913 and participates in the organization's Standard Pathway, a comprehensive 10-year accreditation cycle that includes regular reviews and evaluations. Institutional accreditation affirms that Baker meets rigorous standards for academic quality, governance, student support, and institutional effectiveness while ensuring continued eligibility for federal financial aid and transfer of academic credit.
The next comprehensive reaffirmation of accreditation is scheduled for the 2031-32 academic year as part of the Higher Learning Commission's ongoing accreditation cycle. The successful review reflects Baker's ongoing commitment to continuous improvement as the university continues strengthening the student experience and advancing its mission of educating students to lead lives of service, leadership and purpose.
