Baker NERDs

Created by Kimberly Villegas and LaKayla Thompson

The NERDs program definitely prepares high school students for their freshman year in college. Students earn three credit hours by taking a hands-on course in either mass media or biology. It can be a tough program that requires persistence, but the professors and BU peer leaders keep students engaged, often for more than eight hours each class day.

“Knowing that I am the first to graduate and the first to even be accepted into college is a blessing.”

-Teila B.

The student peer leaders, some of whom serve as teaching assistants, have attended Baker and understand the struggles that come with freshman year. Every day students participate in study hours in which they prepare for tests, finish homework, complete assigned reading or work effectively on projects. Students learn about the “guaranteed 4.0 method” in order to ensure their success in future courses. During study hours, the student peer leaders are available to answer questions, give advice, and provide individual assistance. Although study hours may occasionally be long, developing strong study skills can be a determining factor in students’ future success.

"Going into college, I want to be a more open and talkative person that asks for help and is not afraid to meet new people."

-Carter Y.

After study hours in the morning, students frequently participate in meditation. The purpose of this meditation is to learn how to focus and free your mind from stress. The meditation typically lasts 30 minutes and during this time the students are in complete silence. Sometimes after these meditations, the students will come together as a group and discuss any frustrations or issues they may be dealing with. These frustrations or issues could be dealing with the class workload, stress, lack of communication, or tiredness.

"During this class, I realized that it is not that easy and you need to rely on people every now and then."

-Donovan K.

As the classes carry on from day to day, the students and the professors develop a genuine relationship. Even though some students will not be attending Baker University full-time, the students find the professors as confidants. The professors help the students grow emotionally and academically. In the classroom it is not just about learning. The professors and students build personal connections throughout the month with laughter, patience and compassion.
