Ottawa Sweeps Baker to Open Season

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Baker University softball team opened up the 2013 season with a pair of losses at the hands of rival Ottawa University, 8-7 in eight innings and 7-4 in game two.

The Wildcats were up 5-0 at one point with a three-run home run from Alyse Menghini in the bottom of the first inning. Then Menghini knocked in Ilona Miller in the bottom of the third to give Baker the 4-0 lead. Summer Kelley gave the Wildcats the 5-0 lead with a RBI single to center that scored Erin Greenwood.

Greenwood threw all eight innings for the Wildcats and had a shutout going until the top of the sixth inning when the Braves scored three runs.

Baker went up 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth and entered the top of the seventh looking to close out the game, but Ottawa had other plans and tied up the game at 6-6 on three runs, with just one hit and one error.

In the eighth inning, Ottawa put two runs on the board and Baker got a run with a RBI single by Renata Dill, Greenwood grounded out to the short stop to end the game.

Baker had 12 hits and committed two errors in the first game, Greenwood and Menghini each had three hits and Dill added two.

In the second game, Ottawa scored first in the top of third with a run by Darin Lewis on a throwing error by catcher Tara Chumley.

Baker followed that up with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third on a Greenwood RBI single, a Frankie Farrant RBI single and a Mallorie Nelson RBI single.

The game went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, but then the Braves bats came alive and scored six runs in the top of the sixth to go up, 7-3. The Wildcats added just one run in the bottom of seventh and fell to Ottawa, 7-4.

Nelson got the start for Baker in game two and threw five innings and Brittany Vollenweider came in relief and pitched the final two innings.

Farrant had three hits in the second game and Kelley and Menghini each had two hits for the Wildcats.

Baker will return home on Thursday, Feb. 21 to take on Bethany College at 2 and 4 p.m. at Cavaness Field.
