No. 9 BU Goes 2-1 at Desert Duals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 9 ranked Baker University wrestling team ended the Desert Duals hosted by Watrburg College with 2-1 record on Sunday at the Flamingo Hilton Hotel.

The Wildcats began the day with a 25-12 loss at the hands of No. 1 ranked Grand View, but Baker's senior heavyweight wrestler Brandon Gebhardt had arguably the biggest win of the day, by knocking off No. 1 NAIA ranked heavyweight Eric Thompson of Grand View, 5-3.

It was a rematch of last season's NAIA National Championship heavyweight match and Gebhardt avenged last season's loss to Thompson. Thompson pinned Gebhardt last year to take home the national championship belt and handed Gebhardt the National Runner-up award. Gebhardt finished the duals with a 3-0 record.

Baker had three other wins over No. 1 GVC including Alan Callahan in the 125 division, Nathan Sommer in the 165 and Parker Owen in the 174 pound class.

Baker followed that up with a victory over NAIA opponent Embry-Riddle, 24-15. The Wildcats picked up six wins over Embry-Riddle, including Joel Olivas in the 141 class, Nick Haugen in the 149 pound class, Connor Middleton in the 157 division, Jarid Price in 184, Robert Shadrach in the 197 and Gebhardt again in the heavyweight class.

The Wildcats ended the day with a win over NCAA Division III Coe College, 27-15, and picked up six wins including AJ Gassman in 133, Olivas improved to 2-1 on the day in the 141 division, Nick Haugen also picked up his second win in the 149 pound weight class, Jarid Price did the same with his second win in the 184 and Robert Shadrach finished 2-1 in the 197 class, and Gebhardt improved to 3-0 with a 5-0 decision over his Coe opponent.
