Test Tips

Do Your Best on Every Test

There’s no doubt that taking the ACT or SAT means you’re seriously starting your college search. We’d like to offer tips as you prepare to take this important step.

1. Consult a professional. A variety of study aids are available: websites, test booklets, courses, both free and for a fee. Your guidance counselor will be able to help you find a method that you’ll actually use!

2. Rest, refuel, relax. As test day approaches, get plenty of sleep and make sure your diet is loaded with nutrients that feed your body and brain.

3. Be prepared. It’s not just for Boy Scouts. Make a list of everything you’ll need at the test site: admission ticket, ID, #2 pencils, calculator, watch, snack. . . and then take everything with you! And make sure you have gas in your car. This is not the morning to get stranded!

4. Sartorial splendor! (That word just might be on the test.) Draw on the power of your lucky socks or wear your most comfy sweater or, better yet, both. And dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable in whatever temperature you face in the test center.

5. Believe in yourself. You’ve worked hard, so have confidence in your preparation and in yourself.

6. Share the good news! Be sure to include Baker University’s test code so that we receive your test scores:

ACT – 1386
SAT – 6031

What does the research say? Distributed practice is the key!
Three hours of study time over a week is far more effective than three hours of study in one sitting. I’d recommend 20 to 30 minutes a day for about a month before the test, making sure to cover all the subjects.

Resources

A variety of online sources for tips, tricks, and study strategies are available. Although most of these organizations also offer programs and resources for a cost, they provide quite a bit of information for free.

It’s also a good idea to contact your counselor to see what materials your high school offers.
