Boyd and Wetlands celebrated at June event

Baker University will celebrate two milestones with a celebration on June 30 at the Baker Wetlands Discovery Center. The event will recognize the retirement of Dr. Roger Boyd, emeritus professor of biology, after 42 years of service to the university and commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Baker Wetlands.

The Boyd family has been instrumental in the development, restoration, and operation of the Baker Wetlands. Roger’s father, Dr. Ivan Boyd, a former Baker biology professor and member of the Faculty Hall of Fame, was the first to oversee the preservation and restoration of the wetlands when 573 acres of land were deeded to the university in August 1968. Through his efforts, Baker acquired the land free of charge to use for education, research, and the preservation of the existing wetland habitat. His goal was to bring Baker students to the area to experience it as a field lab and be a part of the preservation and restoration process.

Today, the Wetlands encompasses 927 acres (80 percent have been restored to wetlands), more than 11 miles of hiking trails, and the Discovery Center, an 11,000-square-foot education facility. Thousands of Baker students and thousands more local school kids have visited and conducted research. “All of this is way beyond his wildest expectations,” said Roger Boyd of his father’s goals.

Like his father, Roger is a former Baker biology professor and taught full time for nearly 30 years. He was a Baker student when his father started the wetlands project and served as the education coordinator from March 2015 until August 2017. Now his son, Jon, who grew up helping Roger with several projects at the site, serves as director of the Wetlands.

Baker University will host a celebration of 50 years of Baker Wetlands history and the 42-year career of Dr. Roger Boyd from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, at the Baker Wetlands Discovery Center, 1365 N. 1250 Road, Lawrence, KS 66046. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to jon.boyd@bakerU.edu.
