Dr. Deanna Wagner named vice president for student affairs

Baker University has appointed Dr. Deanna N. Wagner as vice president for student affairs. A strategic, student-centered leader with nearly 20 years of student life experience, Wagner joins Baker University with a proven record of advancing student success, institutional equity, and operational effectiveness. She begins her role July 1, 2025.
Wagner most recently served as associate provost and Title IX coordinator at Capital University in Bexley, Ohio, where she championed initiatives that transformed the student experience while advancing cross-campus collaboration and institutional sustainability. Under her leadership, retention rates increased, equity gaps in student persistence were closed, and partnerships across departments led to more efficient and impactful student services.
Nearly Two Decades of Leadership and Experience in Student Success
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Wagner to Baker University and to define a dedicated division to student affairs and student success,” said Dr. Jody Fournier, Baker University’s incoming president. “Her thoughtful and innovative approach to student engagement and belonging—rooted in data, equity, and collaboration—will be a tremendous asset to our community. Dr. Wagner brings a rare blend of strategic insight and deep care for students, and we are confident her leadership will elevate our campus life and student engagement. Moreover, we will increase student retention, persistence, and degree completion.”
As vice president for student affairs, Wagner will oversee key areas of student life and engagement, including residence life, wellness, leadership development, inclusion efforts, counseling services, and student success programs. She will also work across the institution to advance initiatives that promote student belonging and persistence.
Dynamic, Equity-Focused Leadership Approach
“I am honored to join the Baker University community and excited to partner with students, faculty, and staff in creating vibrant, inclusive experiences that support students’ growth and success,” Wager said. “Baker’s mission and history of excellence deeply align with my passion for student flourishing and institutional impact. I look forward to building on that legacy and helping shape the next chapter of Baker’s student experience.”
Wagner earned her Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of Dayton, where her research focused on student belonging during the COVID-19 pandemic. A nationally recognized voice in higher education, she has presented at NASPA (the national organization for student affairs administrators in higher education), the Higher Learning Commission, and other forums. She currently serves as cochair for the 2025 NASPA Region IV-East Conference. Her leadership style is collaborative and entrepreneurial and is firmly rooted in the belief that student well-being is both a moral and strategic priority.
Earlier this year, Baker University named Dr. Jody Fournier as the 31st president of Baker University; he begins his role on July 1, 2025. Dr. Tina Hartley joins Baker University as the dean of the College of Arts and Science effective July 1, 2025, while Dr. Jonathan Long recently joined as the dean of students.
