Dr. Deming to present “Last Lecture” on March 15

Last Lecture by Michelle Deming on March 15

Dr. Michelle Deming, assistant professor of sociology at Baker University, will deliver the Last Lecture, “Resilience,” at 9 p.m., March 15, 2021, at Rice Auditorium. Capacity in the auditorium is limited to 70. Masks are required. The event will also be livestreamed via Zoom.

Deming joined the Baker faculty in the fall of 2019. In addition to introductory sociology courses, she teaches Gender and Sexuality and Victimology. She has taught sociology courses since 2011 while working on her graduate degrees. She earned a bachelor of arts in psychology and a master’s in public sociology from the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. She earned a PhD in sociology and a graduate certificate in women and gender studies from the University of South Carolina in Columbia and completed two years of a postdoctoral work at the Arnold School of Public Health at USC Columbia.

“Frequently, when people think of resilience, they think of toughness or strength,” Deming said. “But I want students to see that they are most likely resilient in ways they have never considered. Part of this comes from having confidence in your abilities and actively choosing people in your life that are positive and support you.”

The Last Lecture is free and open to the public as part of a series hosted by Baker’s Student Activities Council.

The safety of our attendees is our top priority. Capacity of Rice Auditorium is limited to 70 audience members. Seats are sanitized before attendees enter and after they depart. Entrance spots are marked on the ground 6 feet apart and doors are always open for air circulation. Masks are required.
