Wetlands 2017 seeks diverse interpretations of the fragile ecosystems of wetlands and the biodiversity within them. Both representational and nonrepresentational art will be considered in the jurying process.

Wetlands 2017 Holt-Russell Gallery

The primary factor that distinguishes wetlands from other landforms or water bodies is the characteristic vegetation of aquatic plants, adapted to the unique hydric soil. Wetlands play a variety of roles in the environment, principally water purification, flood control, carbon sink, and shoreline stability.

The exhibition is open to all artists 18 years and older in the disciplines of computer art, drawing, mixed media, painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. All entries must be submitted online by Feb. 9, 2017. The fee is $30 for three entries. All fees are nonrefundable.

Accepted work will be exhibited at Holt-Russell Gallery April 6 – 28, 2017, and all work will be for sale. Work must be original. Entries are limited to three pieces.

Video, film, reproductions, installations or artwork that requires special installation or assembly will not be accepted.

Housed in historic Parmenter Hall on the Baldwin City, Kansas, campus of Baker University, the Holt-Russell Gallery features art by students, faculty, and local, national, and international artists.

Best in show will be awarded a special solo exhibition in the Holt-Russell Gallery March 2–24, 2018. Cash awards to be given at juror’s discretion. Anticipated prize structure will be, first place $500, second place $300, third-place $100, and two $50 honorable mention prizes.

The submission of entries to this competition shall be understood to constitute an agreement on the part of the artist to all rules and conditions as set forth in this prospectus. Entries not meeting the criteria listed herein will be disqualified, and the entry fee will not be refunded.

Accepted Work

Accepted artists will receive instructions for shipping and hand delivery. Shipping costs and insurance are the responsibility of the artist. Return shipping arrangements, either by prepaid shipping label or air bill, is mandatory. Reusable shipping containers only. No Styrofoam peanuts.

All accepted work must be hand-delivered or shipped to Holt-Russell Gallery, Baker University, 618 Eighth St., Baldwin City, KS 66006. No deliveries will be accepted after March 15, 2017.


All work must be original, unsold work, and the artist must own the sole copyright to the art. Substitutions of accepted works will not be allowed, and all delivered work must match the image juried. Frames, mats and wiring must be professional quality and in good condition. No saw-tooth hangers, please. Wiring must be in good condition and substantial enough for the weight of the artwork. Two-dimensional works on paper must be framed and under Plexiglas. All accepted work must remain at the gallery for the duration of the exhibit.

Hanging works are limited to 48 inches high and 48 inches wide, including frame and may not exceed 30 pounds per item. There are no exceptions. Sculptures are limited to 48 inches high x 20 inches deep and may not exceed 40 pounds, including base. Submitted works that are larger than the dimensions specified will not be considered and will be automatically disqualified before the jurying process.

Artwork will be handled with reasonable care. Holt-Russell Gallery and its representatives will not be responsible for loss, theft, or damage of artworks during shipping to and from the gallery. Holt-Russell Gallery reserves the right to reproduce accepted artwork for publicity and documentary purposes. All works will be covered by a blanket insurance policy for the duration of the exhibition.


All work must be available for sale. Holt-Russell Gallery will receive a 25 percent commission on sales during the exhibition. No work may be removed from the gallery until the close of the exhibition, and prices quoted on the entry form may not be changed after acceptance.


Results of the jurying will be communicated after Feb 15, 2017. The list of the accepted artists will be posted on our website and on the Holt-Russell Gallery Facebook page.
